Failed chain tool, replacement advice please

Tried this on a friends dry chain it was not easy then even tougher on one of my own, used some mole(vice) grips after the plastic winder disintegrated and got the thing installed.

Cheap but bought it as it had the opposing part to brace the plate on the far side from the winder.

Question is what type do people prefer, I had a Cyclo one for years with a winder like a mini bench vice and not some moulded piece of s**t?​

The topeak one on their portable tools is superior to some so called workshop ones. It's also availablecas a separate tool. It has a tight link cradle/easer as well which some workshop tools or trendy tools omit.

Not seen them for years. Do they work on modern chains which are a bit tighter.

I have used my 12 buck Park tools one for a decade at least. What is nice are replaceable pins are available6

My thirty yo set work on every chain I've ever aimed them at. Not tried them with 11/12 speed chains tho.

They are so fast, people are usually rather taken aback when they see them in action.

Park CT 5, £15, replaceable pins and light enough you don't notice carrying one. What's not to like?? I have three, two live in bags on bikes and the other is in my garage.

Bought a cheap tool from ebay a few years ago for about a pound, after using it a few times the pin bent so as a temporary repair i made a replacement pin from an old drill bit and its still in use and works ok.

Topeak here too; with me on every ride. Last use on the road was to shorten another rider's chain to make it to the pub and his call to Lady Penelope (or similar). I foolishly bought a lighter and cheaper one last year but it was not fit for purpose. The Topeak weighs 83g (NB says not for 11sp).

Park Tool CT-5. If you break it, something went very wrong. Spare pins used to be on sale too.

I've got a couple of Crank Bros M17 multi-tools, they have chain tools on them and have been used for splitting my chains for the past 6 years with no problems. Fit in the saddle pack nicely too.
