I'm just intrigued by the idea that Simon has ever thought so deeply about men preening themselves that he's felt the need to wince. I'd never realised he was into that kind of imagining....

Oh bugger! I just shaved off my beard of 23 years standing because I am out of work and wanted to look a bit more employable. Seems I only have a 22% chance of it being worth it.

It is worth it. Prospective employers like someone who has made an effort. I have rejected candidates in the past who simply cannot be bothered to shave and have told them or their agency that was the case. Probably less of an issue in a non-office job though.
