It'd be the same thing as if your car had broken down. But all you need to get it running again is an electric socket so just don't let yourself get into that situation.

I'll have to try harder when I eventually switch to EV.

In 1034000 miles (it's sad that I know that figure) of motoring I have run out of fuel 3 times and had 2 mis-fuels. At least I won't be able to do the latter again. 😁

Mind you I do very few miles these days so will have less opportunity to run out of charge.

I've been driving for ooh almost 40 years. Never ran out of petrol and not run out of battery in the last 2.5 years of EVs.
My wife has run out of petrol the once. On the motorway close to us. Genius...

In the ID4 it warns me to charge when I hit 20% battery or thereabouts (approx 50 miles of range left). It also asks me if I would like to set the sat nav to take me to the nearest available charger.

I suppose if you do run out the AA etc must have some sort of portable charger to give you a few kWh, or just tow you.

Serious question - sorry if it is dumb.

What do you do should an EV run out of juice a long way from a charging point?

Unfortunately it's not quite as simple as some would make out, it's a serious issue, if the vehicle were petrol or diesel then the it's a relatively easy option for somebody to bring a can with some of the appropriate fuel in, (there maybe issues getting fuel up to the pump on some diesels but it is usually manageable at the side of the road), failing that a tow rope & tow the vehicle to a petrol station to it fill up, even automatics can be towed slowly.

However if it's an EV then you can't turn up with a can of electrons, there is a common joke going around with a diesel van & generator going around providing said electrons, however I'm not sure that this is even feasible as it would have to be a considerable sized generator to provide enough charge, also there is the issue that generators charge tends to be very dirty & likely to damage the batteries.

Another alternative would be for a vehicle to come out with a charged battery in the back of it & connect the 2 batteries together to even out the charge between them, this is logically feasible, although I've never heard of it being done.

Finally you cannot tow an EV, so there are 2 options, either a flatbed truck, or the AA use a spec lift on the front wheels, then remove the rear wheels & fit freewheeling hubs https://www.theaa.com/about-us/newsroom/the-aa-freewheeling-hub

I know it shouldn't but in life crap happens. 😁

Seriously though - I assume it is a rescue service job to take the car to the nearest charging point?

Like others have said, you get plenty of repeated warnings to charge. The driver will be an absolute numpty to go totally flat.

Many rescue companies now carry a generator to give you a short rapid charge to get you to a charge point.

OK - quick question...

I got a towbar bike rack for Christmas, but owing to stupidity on my part, got the wrong one, or at least not the one I intended.
I intended to get the Buzzrack Eazzy 3 (16.6kg). However due to the aforementioned stupidity, what I actually asked for was the Buzz Rack E-Hornet 3 (18.8kg).

Now Roofbox will swap the bike rack without a problem, but won't refund the difference (£15) between the E-Hornet and the Eazzy. On discussion with my wife, she asked why I didn't go for the Eazzy 4 (19.8kg) as there are 4 of us in the family. Now one reason is that she seldom cycles. The other reason was it was more expensive and 3kg heavier. Her thought is that as we will otherwise be down £15, it would be better to get the capacity and pay the extra £40.

So to get to the point, does anyone know whether carrying the extra 3.2kg going to make any significant difference to range?

I could of course keep the E-Hornet but would need to spend another tenner on a 7pin to 13pin adapter, which make swapping seem better again...

For the odd time you need 4 bikes having the capacity £40 will be worth it in no grief from the wife

No you won't notice 3-4 kg extra

Would you allow this? Not sure I'd be happy with it, as I put upthread generator electricity tends to be very brown, I can't see it doing the battery much good.

Edit:- Maybe I'm wrong https://www.elephantenergy.org/char...electric vehicle successfully, without hassle.

That's a myth apparently, you just stick it in neutral and tow it like any other car. Saw a video about it recently (but darned if I can find it again).

Only reference that I could find saying you could were Peugeot, all the rest said flatbed or all 4 wheels off the ground. Maybe Peugeot have a different way of engaging/disengaging the drive to wheels.

It does seem to be a mixed picture.

Can't say it would be a deal breaker for me. In 30-odd years of driving I've been towed once - and that was when I was a lot younger and driving clunkers.

Is that because they are the free ones some owners have access to or just the lack of chargers?
