Wait while Chris Rea has a go in the Time Transit, Ford will just call it a day and give up

Well, we chopped in our 2019 Kona for an ex-demo 74-plate Ultimate with Lux Pack 🫣
A slightly unexpected move, but I had been considering the “expensive car supplement” & how that might stops us leaping from next April….& a good part-ex against an ex-demo swung the decision: test drive to swap in 2 days 🤪

What a step up 😎

Plenty of funky features, feels much more grown up, no wheel scrabbling (although if I was on my own, I quite enjoyed that 🤣).
A bigger & much more grown up quality feel: 30% bigger boot and rear legroom, plus a sensible frunk for all the cables to live 👍
Simple things like electric boot, memory seats and and auto hold that keeps the setting & doesn’t need re clicking every drive 👀
A nice balance of real buttons & screen. I appreciate it is a personal thing, but I vehemently hate the ones with everything on a screen: we had a test drive in a BYD Atto (the Hyundai garage was shifting to them) & whilst the interior (to me) felt ghastly, the fact that everything was hidden on screens would drive me mad. Sure, I could learn to talk to the car, & I have no doubt in maybe 5-10 years that is how all cars will be, but maybe I don’t want to 🤣

Economy is down, but part of that is the 19” rims. I’d prefer the 17” (cheaper tyres as well as perhaps 20 more miles per ‘tank’. Hey ho.
On the bright side, I discovered we have an extra hour on our Octopus Go - missed that email - so we can squeeze more in when needed overnight cheaply 🎉

The EV adventure continues 💪

Congratulations on new car, presume this comes with larger battery and 300 mile range?

Id look out for a set of 17" rims when you are coming around for new tyres. The ride will be nicer, more range and less chance of kerbing

20’s on ours, ride is ok But Mrs G has kerbed one already!

We semi-regularly travel from Uttoxeter to Newbury and back (260 mile round trip) to my parents, and more regularly Hull and back (240 miles) to Jo's. Neither of our sets of parents has a charger, so visiting for the weekend (which would often be done straight after work on a Friday, and therefore not from fully-charged) would really need to be done without charging.
That's why the granny charger was invented. Once you get there, plug in to a normal 240v socket and leave on charge for as long as possible. Unless you need to do a ton of driving when you are there, you'll soon regain enough range to get home. Plus with 240 miles you are looking at at least one stop, probably involving lunch.

Having youngish children means that we'd really rather not spend longer than necessary on the road, faffing about at service stations.
Don't go near service stations - they are the worst place to charge. Find a dedicated EV charging hub - they are usually situated near a nice pub or cafe.
Case in point, my daughter was volunteering last week in the Peak District (Dovedale). Found the Stepping Stones, nice little pub with a good lunch menu and three superchargers in the car park.

Coming back, got the daughter on zap map and found 8 super chargers in the car park for a travel-lodge with adjoining pub. Again, by the time a nice lunch was had, the car was fully charged.

My son has 21" rims on his Model Y performance. It's rides really nicely, suspension is tuned beautifully.

But he has already kerbed it several times. He has two early kerb incidents repaired. He can't be bothered now, accepts he will need major wheel repairs at some point.

17/18" wheel in my opinion is the optimum size

The theoretical 300 miles 🤣
I’d be happy to get 220+ this time of year 👀

Yes, I’ll keep an eye out. Happy to store some if I can find any bargains.

The current ones are also diamond cut - another dreadful invention 🤣. Look good for a year or two, then inevitably break down a bit and very hard to refurb.

TBH, I hate the relentless drive for large rims: as you say, smaller rims = more comfort, less kerbing risk, and of course cheaper tyres (despite getting more rubber for your money 🤪).

I would also likely get all-season tyres….which might defeat the aim for better economy, being a little stickier 🤷‍♂️

Surprised by the reduced range, that's not much more than our 62kW nissan leaf. It does 200 winter miles around 270 max in summer.

Kona EVs were renowned for particularly good range for relatively smaller battery pack

Me too.
Although.....we are only 100 miles in, so maybe it needs to learn my driving (which I probably need to *cough* ease down).

It is a physically bigger car - 15cm longer, 4cm higher. Will see how we go over the coming months

Looks like Labour have killed off mild hybrids with their announcement just before Christmas. They feel that the figures that car makers are suggesting re economy and emissions aren't realistic.

The government suggest that hybrids pollute 242% more than advertised figures-no really

Any link to what they mean by “mild hybrids”? I read they are consulting, but the MSN report doesn’t say who with: they haven’t asked me 🫣

I’ve always felt they are a mostly a nonsense.
Had a workmate get an Outlander hybrid years ago for the BIK tax savings. Never once plugged it in (& grumbled about the short range due to the small petrol tank!).

I can , however, also see how a large chunk of UK folk will struggle to own an EV without much inconvenience.
We love our EV, but have a driveway and charge point that makes things super easy….but we still manage perhaps 5k miles in my 10 year old XC60 diesel (owned from new 💪). These are miles we could not easily manage, or indeed manage at all, with the EV. Load lugging trips to the tip, moving the offspring, driving to the French Alps, etc….

Electric isn’t the panacea for all drivers, whatever anyone says.

These are all things we intend to do with an EV

Good intentions are one thing….the practicality of managing a multi-hop 1,400km journey is fine when you’re retired, but rather high stress if you are on a tighter timeline 🤷‍♂️

Heck, we once did it overnight - can’t imagine that with an EV, nor the fact that en France we potter along at a steady 80 on the toll roads.

Similarly, we have moved our offspring through MANY moves (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Leeds, Colchester, Essex, London)…..none of which would have fitted physically in our EV, & all of which would have taken longer (& been a fair bit less comfortable!). Fact!

But good luck. Of course these things are all possible with more time or multiple trips.

My simple point being that EVs are rarely the panacea for everyone’s needs 🤷‍♂️
