A note of caution - if you have more than one bike buy the same type for both!!!!

I have GP1 on my Hybrid and GP3 on my flat barred road bike.

All was going well until I moved my hands outwards to use the bar ends. It was only at this point that I realised I was on my Hybrid and they weren't there!!!

For what it's worth, they're both terrific grips and are really comfortable. I have to say though that the extra position that the GP3 allows you to take with your hands comes in really handy and helps fight off numb hands on very long rides so definitely worth the extra few quid

They've changed the numbers and I'm easily confused! I have the 5's which were the 3's a couple of years ago when I bought them. They're huge and on any aesthetic level probably a big fail, however they're also the comfiest bar system I've used, straights, drops, SJS and Cane Creek bar ends... the composite (Plastic) used for the bar ends is the most effective way to reduce the feel of rough roads I've come across. It looks like the newer GP3 uses the same material. If I've any complaint it would apply to all Ergon grips, the grips wear and when they do the rubbery stuff is horrible, sticky and dirty. It's a shame they are not replaceable, instead you have to buy the complete thing.

After I was awake all night thinking about this thread I'm at this point.

Padded grips 100%.
Bar levers GP 3 size 50% or SJS/ Giant Contact Ergo size 50%

PS.. My wife thinks I worry too much about such things  little does she know..

my only preference towards the additional side grips was that it extended the palm area giving that gap, which the GP3's don't. Luckily when I was making up my mind, the bike shop simply fitted one set to one side of my bike and the other to the other and I was able to try both together - my mind was made up instantly. The extended area, for longer times in the saddle was invaluable for both myself and my OH.

I also agree with having the same across styles of bars as well - it makes life a little easier...

PS - I can think of worse things to worry about at night....

Ideal scenario for you Paul would be to try them all in a shop before you buy if at all possible. The gp3s packaging is such that you could only try one off the grips as you have to destroy the package to get at the other.
Even trying one for size and feel allows you to return if you don't like what you see. Like i say though, the shop route is the best option ideally.

One thing i forgot to add is i wasn't sure when i got them which side was the right way 'up' so i guess they can be used either way. One side is convex and one is concave. Maybe you should fly over to the north west and try mine and satnavs bikes ha ha.

Giant Ergo grips came with my sons bike. He had one feel of my GP3s and switched them. You really do get what you pay for I'm afraid. I had massive issues with numb hands when I first started riding and I tried several different grips. My final solution was the Ergon grips and padded (but loose fitting to allow good circulation) gloves. I don't experience numb hands now at all.

Hi Billy..

I did see some Bontrager end grips at the Trek shop I got my bike from, so I might have a trip down to the shop and see if they might have a pair lurking about I could try..

Taking the road or mtb to the UK in the back of the estate had crossed my mind ...
