Posts mentioning any perceived vaguaries of the US president & references to WW3, etc, are NCAP material and have been edited out accordingly. Just keep posts generic and on track to keep the thread open. Thanks.

I had a few endowments a long time ago
When they got close to their termination date I realised that they had dropped a lot recently

I realised that any investment based on the stock market (or similar) should never have a fixed termination date
It just doesn;t make sense

but if you have one then they may be nothing you can do

but you could try contacting the company that runs it - they may be open to an extension
maybe

Done that, no extension allowed.

That's why my kids ISA transfer to cash over a period of time before they mature... Say gradually over 3 years....

It's always a gamble by it's very nature of being speculative.

I agree with the "... racket at worst" comment although these days the various market regulatory authorities are way hotter than they used to be.

Would be a great career for those capable enough.

At least since the 'online era' I have considered, several times, trying my hand at day trading.

I even looked into a couple of platforms to facilitate this. But...

... after some fairly intensive investigating I decided a) I couldn't be arsed to invest the inordinate amount of time required to research markets & companies properly, b) I, hand on heart, could not see the market 'patterns' that were oft-mentioned and c) I realised it was all too risky for a risk-adverse individual like me.

So, called it a day before I started & stuck to Cash Isa's, FRB's and some mild speculation with S&S Isa's.

I would never have 'made it' career-wise in the stock trading sector. 🤷‍♂️

A former manager used to do the markets..I asked him how he did..and his answer was it eas like doing the horses, you need to do homework, study form, second guess etc etc, it's quite intensive if you want to have a reasonable chance of success. He used to double his wages with the income from it so it want small.money.
That said, it may have been a boom period ?

Like doing the horses “The sure bet didn’t start, the favourite fell at the first fence, and the rank outsider came from nowhere”

And again, anyone who believes they can beat the market is kidding only themselves.

Anyone who *genuinely* consistently outperformed the market wouldn't be doing it as a second job, they'd be a billionaire.

You're a genius on the stockmarket until suddenly, you're not.

I used to work with a guy who "knew how to play the market"
he got into it when all the public services were being sold off and "worked out how to make money" on it all

He did make a lot of money buying and selling share like BT and all that at the start

then he started thinking he was clever and was going on one day about some stock he "knew" was going to rocket and he had bought loads of shares
He was going to make loads in the next week
then he went quiet

I checked and found that the price had crashed
but digging deeper (not easy before the WWW and all that) suggested that it was a blip but might be OK if you hung on for a month or two
so I left it and checked a few months later and it had grown a lot

but this bloke never mentioned shares again!

I don;t think he ever liked me - I think he thought I was an idiot

Part of my Accountancy Exams went into studying the stock market. The outcome of many weeks study - it was a gamble. It's just luck.

Hopefully OP's endowment will recover a bit and he can get it 'out' before more information is available in the next 90 days - FTSE100 rallied this morning.

the Nasdaq and the Dow are now back with 2-3% of where they were a month ago...
and c5% up on 1 year basis

B- could do better!
Do it yourself without the time & resources to devote to research brings in a lot of gamble and luck. Use a fund manager either directly or indirectly via composite funds / trackers etc (or we mainly all do with our pensions etc) and you spread your risk to mitigate a lot of that gamble.

Aye Maz worked for BT and took part in the 'Share Save' scheme then as soon as possible sold those shares (Tax Free) and carried on with the next one, The share price kept going up getting to close to £18 and one woman in her office kept all her shares bragging "I've got X thousands in shares now" until they crashed back down to about £3 a share......................She went awful quiet about it after that.
