well done, i am similar to you. I started on 4th jan 2011 and did my last commute of the year this evening. I have done a full 12 month commute in all weathers covering 4000 miles and have loved it. I can honestly say i will never go back to the train.

i cant match your speeds, 17mph average is the best i can muster in London traffic, I will be adding a new bike at some point too.

If you are averaging 19mph you'll easily do 80 miles at a lower speed, copper c, good luck

I normally get between 16-18 mph on the commute depending on traffic and lights, and I'm talking rolling average too! 19 mph was a once off (well, hopefully not, but for now it is) and it was on my commute which isn't long (6.5 miles). On longer rides they come out at 15mph, so less room for play in the eighty miler!

I'll get there. I'm convinced a lighter road bike on thinner tyres (currently on a cross bike with semi slick 35’s) will make all the difference. If it won't for gods sake don't tell me, this is how I'm helping justify the cost to both me and the wife!

Hmmmm the CX is pretty light already! It is only a kg or so heavier than my Carbon £1800 bike and is on my commute only a minute or so slower and most of that I am putting down to the winter^_^

BUT I enjoy riding my Spec Roubaix a lot more so you can still buy the carbon, just do not expect it to allow you to break the 20mph/80 miler with ease, the engine weight is much easier to reduce and improve performance

well done

ive completed my first full year, done just over 400 miles on the bike plus a few more on long walks/climbs

im hoping to double this next year, my target is 800 miles, would love to get 1k but ill see how close i get to 800 first.

ill need to average 16 miles per week, im unlikely to do that for the first few months but come spring im hoping to do a regular 26 miles run every week and supplement this with some more, lets see how i go

Great stuff! The thinner tyres will make a difference. I'd just get used to ignoring the cost, it can get expensive! Oh, and getting new bits and pieces delivered to the office helps to keep the missus in the dark happy...
