Emigration

If you had the opportunity to emigrate would you do it?

Already emigrated. Didn't have anything to sell, and the US to the UK is a pretty easy move, though of course we'll never really be British despite being given passports requiring "in the Name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hinderance." We may be off again at some point, but it would be hard to leave our peaceful green patch.

An ex-colleague went through one of the brit conversion ceremonies. She was required to state some kind of allegiance, but ended up doing so to "the Queen and her Hairs" as she'd never previously encountered the word "Heirs".

I cannot recall if it was the local council (Coventry) or Barnardos who arranged it but I was persuaded, or should I say pressurised, into going out to Australia when I was 11 or 12. We were taken to a home in Ripon where we were got ready and the admin work was done for the trip. A couple of days before I was due to sail I changed my mind so I absconded and kept out of the way until after sailing day. The scheme was stopped shortly after that, nothing to do with me though. I think that was the final straw for the authorities as I was put before the court and shipped off to an Approved School once I was picked up. I often wonder if I made a bad choice but looking back with any regrets is a waste of time.

The most "let or hindrance" I have experienced has been leaving and re-entering the UK.

Bollocks! I am Greek. I lived all my life in hot climates and I am supposed to be tolerant to heat. My house in (a southern suburb of) Athens was overlooking the sea and I can promise you: your every day life during the hot summer months is HELL! Our houses are air-conditioned for most part of the year (8-20 months) which makes you feel like you've been hit by fire wall every time you dare to go out. Try walking for 20 minutes in your lunch break (assuming you have one when working in Greece, which hardly ever is the case) and you'll feel like you've ran a marathon. So, take my word for it, the heat IS unbearable!

Well I certainly wouldn't go to live in Athens, that is for sure, but I do like a warm climate. My place of birth is in Africa and I lived in Cyprus as a child. I remember the summer heat very well indeed and used to love going out in the sun when stones got too hot to touch! The winters I didn't like. When I arrived in England I was a very dark brown colour for a long while and I can remember the first time in my life I ever got sunburn, on my arms. I also remember that my elder brother wore a pullover every day during his first summer here! Now I spend my summers in France I enjoy the heat even when I am working.

We slipped through before the ceremony and test (and £££! fees).

I saw a doc last year about the children who were shipped off in the 50's and 60's...you got very lucky...they all seemed to end up as damaged goods for their ordeal...You must have had a very tough upbringing either way

My bro lives outside Pattaya in Thailand from Oct to March so he misses the winter. He speaks good Thai and has finally met a Thai ladyboy called Kevin which is handy when putting out the bins, mowing the lawn and washing the car!!! Ps only joking lol but he loves it out there for 6 months of the year.

Already have emigrated ... twice!
Once by force (my parents moved me from Germany to Italy in primary school age) second time, to Scotland, by choice.
Will probably emigrate again to a warmer country at some time in the future or maybe spend half of the year abroad if I can't afford the heating bills anymore

I think that this year I finally decided that I should leave England. And move to Wales. Whether I can persuade Her Nibs is another matter.

What happened to the 'when a man is tired of London he is tired of life' stuff?

My daughters best mate has/had (RIP) a Japanese mother and an English father. He worked there as a TEFL teacher, but they settled in England. He said that he experienced a lot of Xenophobic behaviour there, and people would talk about him in the 3rd person when standing next to him, or just ignore him completely. They moved to the UK where they started a family. Daughters mate looks 100% Japanese, but is 99% English in her outlook (likes Sushi though). They are treated as outsiders when visiting the family in Japan. She has just gone off travelling to Oz so I'm wondering how she might find the reception there.

Japan is quite openly xenophobic, but as a well-off white guy, I'm not going to pretend it's a problem for me because it isn't, and in addition there isn't the undercurrent of physical threat that accompanies racism in Britain. The xenophobia is a really serious problem for other Asians in Japan, even those whose families have lived here for generations, and for darker-skinned people.

I would, in a heartbeat.

Not sure where, perhaps not too far. I very almost lived in De Haag about 10 years ago, and I regret not doing it now.

Me and my others of have been looking for a place in Greece, we like the islands, and property is very cheap. We've got our eyes on a little house thats been for sale for 2 years, and is now £16'000. Crazy hey? That would be just to spend some time out there and to rent it, not to live in permanently, it would be too small for that.

I'm a scouser displaced in london. I'll never be a Londoner, and it has only every been temporary. We are thinking SW England for the next move, but if an opportunity to move abroad arose I would seriously want to think about it.

I've an ex that's recently moved to Australia, and a close friend gone to Germany. I think I need to change my deodorant.

Once worked with this Hong Kong guy who was half Japanese and half Chinese. He regarded himself Japanese and thus a cut above his Chinese colleagues. And I see that his profile is on t'internet and that he is now a UK citizen! Clearly British is best..
