Could it be the cables not tight enough to send the derailleur up to the inner cog ?
It's a combination of things.
bpsmith posted a link that will guide you through all the steps.
When you've done it once, you'll realise how easy it is.

I spent some time fitting the wheels that came with my Bianchi onto my Defy tonight. Minor adjustment to limit screws and indexing needed, but I decided to start from scratch based on the Park Tool link. Acting as if I had never done it before, following the instructions simply, and took 20 mins tops!

It really is that easy, even on first attempt.

With the cable disconnected, adjust the low limit screw until the chain drops onto the small chainring. Then re connect the cable (pull it hand tight just to take up the slack) and reconnect.

also front dérailleur is catching my chain when i'm on the big cog (it's the frame side thats catching) and the adjustment screws just above the dérailleur don't move the dérailleur in any direction.......any ideas?

Lol...don't worry, once you've done it once, you'll see how easy it is and will be more confident next time.
There is a bolt on the derailleur that pinches the cable, just unscrew it and remove the cable completely.
