I used to get up to a hundred miles before squeakiness, or the next wet ride, whichever came first.
I gave up because of the cost in lubricant. Not only did I use it frequently, I used more of it because waxy flakes blocked the nozzle and made small 1-link drops difficult to get out.

I must be doing something right as when ever chain life is talked about I'm always at the top end of the scale with 10/11sp chain with chains replaced at 0.75% stretch.
I suspect living near Cambridge has more to do with it. Dust from peaty fields is much less abrasive than that from fields where there's quartzy sand in the soil.

I definitely get more than 50 miles out of an application of Finish Line Dry (in the dry), probably closer to 100. Remember you're supposed to apply it a while before a ride, in order to give the application medium time to evaporate, which then allows the PTFE to do it's thing.

I'll get through a 120ml bottle or two a season, so £5 to £10 per season on lubricant isn't too bad! Apply it sparingly, you don't need to put a massive glob on each roller - and obviously apply it after each wet ride.

Dry lube won't set up properly unless the chain is totally degreased and dried before applying.

Don't complain that it doesn't work well after adding it to an oily chain!

My chains are degreased with an industrial strength degreaser, in a machine, then completely dried. My lube is left to set overnight or longer. Dry lube still squeaks after a few miles or your chain will go noisy. I've not found a dry lube that lasts effectively for 100 miles plus. I did once use a wax solution that worked very well but it was more trouble than it was worth melting the stuff and getting earache from the wife because I made a mess with it in the kitchen:blush:

I only use dry in summer because it stops me from getting dirty when the bikes are moved in and out of vehicles, or to stop stuff that touches the drive chain when in transit from getting oily marks. It's got it good points and I'm quite happy to relube mid ride if I'm doing a ton plus. It's an excuse to go into a pub:cheers:

We also have a fair amount of clay about which if gets into the chain works as a ceramic polishing paste. If you lubricate often enough then you don't get grit/dust into the chain, this is the key to good chain life. You can feel when you're starting to get dust ingress in the chain through your feet at high load.

I use Finish Line Dry and I find it last a little bit longer than Muc Off Dry, although the dispenser bottle isn't as good!
I probably get a couple of 30/40 mile rides before reapplying. I forgot recently and my chain began to squeak 20 odd miles from home and it drove me bonkers!

Chainsaw oil isn't dry or clean. I use it in winter and have done for years.

used this on a motorcycle chain didn't seem to fling anywhere near as much as the proper motorcycle chain lube, was great stuff.

used this aswell on the motorcycle & was by far the best lubricant I found, had considered it for the bike but means taking the chain off which i don't know if i could be bothered with having to do that every time. I did it in the garage and used a gas camping cooker to melt it ( saved the b011icking from mum for messing up the kitchen) lasted ages though on the motorbike so shouldn't need to do it often on the bike considering the mileage i do & conditions i ride in, may be worth doing for me anyway.

All of this dry lube chat is a waste of time.
I'm off to the highlands tonight*, best take some wet stuff:rain:

*if it keeps raining I may change my mind! 9 hr drive one way for a 5day swim isn't looking very appealing.

Further heavy rain will affect many areas through the rest of Sunday, increasingly affecting eastern Scotland in particular this evening. This will combine with increasing winds across some areas to produce hazardous conditions for outdoor activities. The public should be aware of the potential for some disruption.'''

I started using pro Gold on my carbon roadie as finish line dry and all the other wax and dry lubes lasted one day of commuting especially as the weather has been that mixed up here. The Pro Gold seems to stay wet but not gunky and doesn`t wash off in the rain. I do generally use the finish line green on the fixed as its is out in all weathers.
