It might be if I hadn't already said I'll be doing it well away from other people. Apart from the summer hols it's standard to do a 3-4 hour walk there without seeing anyone.

Just because you don't see anyone, doesn't mean there isn't somebody nearby trying to enjoy a walk or ride in the peace & quiet.

Just be aware how annoying drones are to others.

Just be aware how annoying cycling is to others. And yet here we are.

Yes there are idiots who will fly a drone 30m above your home. Legal (for sub 250g) but a complete dick move. Most people don't do this in the same way that most cyclists don't go through red lights.

Assuming you can even hear a small drone from about 70m up, if it annoys you, it is because you are putting in an effort to be offended.

Nonsense. A beautiful and peaceful location like the one in the photo ruined but an entitled selfish wotsit who spoils it for anyone else who might also be there by flying around adding noise and the annoyance you’re now being filmed.

I think in France the no-fly zones apply to all classes, as far as I can see.

That's UK rules, though, personally I'd be very careful in France with one

I don't know much about drones, but I'd thoroughly research their laws before using one. The French police don't pussyfoot about, and you don't realise how genial UK police are until a Gemdarme points a gun at your leg until you answer their questions.

I witnessed French police spraying some kind of pepper spray and beating someone with a baton on a street in Nice, they didn't stop until they were sure their victim wasn't going to move again for a while, even some other police were struggling having taken a face full of spray themselves.

Been reading up... a lot of info online. Being under 250g makes a big difference both in the UK and EU. Have got my 'operator's ID' for the UK, but don't need a 'Flyer's ID' that requires an online theory test to be passed.

Have a look on you tube for Ryan Van Duzer, he uses a drone to get footage on his bike packing adventures around the world, gets some cracking videos

Thanks, will have a look, though I suspect I'll use mine mainly for shorts on walks and short rides, with specific targets for one-take videos of POVs unavailable from ground level. (I haven't really got an interest in fancy video editing, but I guess that might change if I see a need.) Till I've got used to the controls, I'll be staying well away from trees, whatever. I suspect that people who are used to joystick control of computer games would be much more adept at navigating more complex locations.

I think they'll just be an addition to my cheesy still photography, as that's a simple 'turn on - click - turn off' operation, so less time consuming. That said, I was impressed with the ease of this one, with a fairly fool-proof interface: I'd watched a 20-minute tutorial on Youtube last night, but most of the stuff was explained in the app or was intuitive.

Part of my rationale is to give me something to keep my mind off long hard Alpine rides, as I'm under doctor's orders not to overdo it, and not doing long Alpine rides out there is torture.... so many mountains, so many beautiful roads...
