My grandfather used a cut throat razor. I remember him using the leather strap to hone it.

I'm sure you'll find something safer here: http://www.muehle-shaving.com/

Have used a Merkur razor like http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk/merkur/4132678-Merkur-Classic-33C-Safety-Razor-Chrome.html for several years but used to just grab the cheap blades I found in Boots or wherever.
Then a year or so ago I decided to try some other blades to see if there was actually a difference. Bought a sample pack http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk...ditional-Shaving-Razor-Blade-Sample-Pack.html and realised there was. It's a good idea, but over a year on I still haven't finished all the samples and though I made up my mind which brand I preferred ages ago I'm too tight to chuck the others away.

Always found it much more comfortable than cartridge razors (used to use a Gillette Sensor Excel I think it was) and a hell of a lot cheaper despite the initial outlay.

Also got a badger hair brush that must be 10 years old now and got through a few tubs of cream in the same time and quite like http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk...et-Sandalwood-Shaving-Cream-696770010013.html

I too changed from various prroprietary systems to traditional double edged - and am now a convert. Got a couple of Edwin Jagger razors - one lives in my travel bag in case you wondered why two. I particulary recommend their model with a rubber coated handle; their knurled handle one is just a touch slippery. They're about £25. Do buy their plastic cover for the razor else you'll cut your finger rummaging in bag. Blades are dirt cheap - get a mixed stock in when you order the razor to decide which make suits you best. I suspect they are slightly different size so some cut deeper rather than being sharper as such(guessing). Also need a brush - ideally badger - though I rarely bother taking brush if travelling. I just use normal soap or shower gel rather than special lotions and potions.

and handy hint no 144 - when the blade seems blunt - turn it over - used the other way up gives you a few more goes.

Well I've ordered some gear.

Edwin Jagger DE89 and other smelly stuff.

I'll report back forthwith once I've tried it out.

N+1 applies, of course...

You are so right.

Trying to chose amongst the bewildering choice on offer is difficult. I'm going to do my best to resist though.

As for the smellies I've ordered, I liked the sound of Sandalwood, got some Taylors of Old Bond St shaving stuff plus a bottle of aftershave of the same.

I cannot wait.

And for the N+1 .... It is birthday soon and then xmas.

Jesus, I'm turning into a mid 40's beardless hipster  ..... the only thing saving me is a hairy back.

I actually have an anniversary, birthdays and xtmas special occasion razor.

But I don't shave everyday. A gentleman never did.
