i dont think that 1l per 10miles is something bad, you have to realise that heavier people sweats more and thus they need more water, i myself am around 80 kilos and need about 700ml for 10 mile trip

Its a good point about set up, im not sure how high to have seat etc. as for gears i only use the middle range? The bike is a great bike its me that needs to change. I have determination just legs feel really heavy at the 10 mile mark. Would it help if i rested 1 day a week?

Sorry, but I think there's a lot of ill-informed krap about water and food etc. on this thread.

I agree.

That degree of water consumption is ludicrous and if you think you are going to become dehydrated in 10 miles you are deluded.

To whoever is saying at 80kg they need 700ml for a 10 mile trip, unless you are about 4ft tall or suffer from a medical disorder, that is a crock of butt muck! I don't mean to be offensive but come on... that is ridiculous.

Depends how you are riding the 10 miles ....
If you're going flat-out from the gun then maybe you need to start more gently and pace yourself more in order to go further. Don't push it, go easy, the miles will come.
This is good advice. Stay well within yourself and your stamina will improve and allow you to stretch your distances.

Also, check that your wheels are running freely and that your tyres are pumped up to a reasonable level with a track pump to make sure that you are not pushing against any unnecessary resistance.

Nutrition? For 10 miles??? Not needed.

Over 10 miles a sip from a 500ml bottle every 10-15mnutes is all you need, I drink a lot and ride warm clothing-wise, so I sweat. But the way to improve on 10 miles is simple. Go a little slower and ride a little further and then stick to the new distance for the next few rides until you are riding at your normal pace. Then do it again.

Hi Pikeman.
I am pretty new to all this too. I found riding in a group has helped me achieve longer distances. My better half & I take part in sky rides. Managed 15 miles ok Sunday. Once you have done it once the mental block is gone.

There are a few methods to set the saddle height right. The easy one which I usually suggest is to have it so that with the heel on the pedal your leg is straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke. The leg will then have about the right amount of bend when pushing with the ball of the foot and you can fine tune it to suit from there.

It makes a big difference when you've got it right.

Being in mid range is fine for most pottering round. You won't want the big ring until you start getting some speed up.

What?
I did 65 miles on the Whistable Night ride and drank less than 1.5L on the ride and a mug of tea. At the seafront finish brekkie I had another mug of tea. Then 6 pints of beer after breakfast. Then 0.5L water on the coach home.
If you think you need 1L water/10 miles you're doing something wrong somewhere ....

Where did I say you need 1L of water for every 10 miles ?

I needed it and thats all that matters. It was hot, I was thirsty.

Back off your high horse mate ! You need anger management !

Nobody said that it was compulsory.

Calm down !

By the way, I drink 3L of Evian a day just sat behind my desk.

Hi Pikeman

This has some really useful set-up info without getting poncy, good practical advice.

Yes, having 1 or 2 rest days is very sensible as a beginner. Also: Warm-up gently over the first couple of miles and warm-down over the last mile or so. Give the body time to wake-up and calm-down if you like. As I get older (51) I find the warm-up becomes longer and more important.
