Decided today to go to Kilmacolm. It's around 11 miles away, so around 22 there and back.

Hoping to be able to do 40 miles for the round trip to Gourock by the end of the holidays.

Is there anything I need to take with me? It's raining outside and I expect that it will continue to rain all day.

Gloves
Water
Money
Phone

is all I can really think of right now, what other necessities are there?

Berties

Fast and careful!
Good luck

Hi Jazloc, probably add a spare inner tube and any tools you might need - 40 miles is a long walk home! Enjoy your trip out, I find cycle paths on former railways quite hard as there is either only a slight uphill or downhill but very little respite. Remember to stop for cake! :hungry:

Shorts and testosterone and speed.

Are baggy shorts okay? :cold:

Thanks, I've got a pump, spare inner tube and some allen keys in my saddle bag. I think I heard somewhere "Drink before you're thirsty and eat before you're hungry", good advice? ^_^

I normally check what the rains doing on www.raintoday.co.uk before a ride

I like to take some sweets/mars bar with me on longer rides incase i run out of energy.

Good luck

Kinda says it all really :cursing:

Yeah sounds good - either that or aim to drink at least every 30 minutes and eat at least every hour. And don't knock your pan in trying to set speed records, just go at your pace, aim to finish and enjoy yourself!

Ouch, worst place in the country today for rain, dont let that stop you though!

I prefer to underdress a bit, shorts and tshirt for rain if its warm enough rather than waterproofs, because i just overheat so badly and sweat in them. Just need non absorbent materials really, nothing worse than trying to cycle with wet jeans stuck to your legs

I've got a 750ml bottle in my cage and I'll take a 1L one in my bag. I'll take something chocolate with me too. I don't plan to set any land speed records today, still getting used to my new tyres after I converted from knobbly ones, really slippy at some points

I'll be wearing a long sleeve cycling jersey, it's not waterproof so it gets wet fairly easily. The only waterproof jacket I have isn't breathable and it's pretty heavy too, wouldn't be able to fit it in my bag if it got too warm.

To be honest I would go with thin layers, though cycling in the rain (especially the type we get in Scotland) nothing is going to keep you bone dry - if I have dry and warm hands and feet and I'm not too cold I'm generally a happy boy.

They are fine but lycra is better in the rain they soak up less, get less heavy and generally dry faster too.

Never seen a 14 year old wearing lycra before
