A better idea would be a man with a van who could gas all dogs not on a lead, caught sh*tting or barking.

Ideal, as is extending the idea to cats. Although the cats would just be gassed on sight obviously.

Signed the thing anyway, it's a start.

Well... OK, they don't bark, that's just silly. And they don't shoot in the streets either, they shoot in my bloody garden.

Not another anti-cat thread! There are some bad dog owners out there that interfere with cyclists and other group users but there is no need to turn things into dog walkers v cyclists, hells grannies v pushcharis, cars against lorries or any other combination. Dog licenses will not help, they didn't work in the 80s when society was more cohesive and there was marginally more responsibility and less mememe so it most certainly isn't going to work now.

A better idea would be for each council to employ a man witha van who could humanely gas all dogs not on a lead, caught sh*tting or barking or yapping too loudly or too long.
and similarly deal with motor vehicle drivers who overtake too close, cut cyclists up, and say SMIDSY.

My boss got bitten by an Alsatian a few weeks ago on the recycle round. The mother of the owner was taking it out for a walk and was unable to control it. The wound was quite nasty.

I met this said dog a month before with its owner taking it for a walk, I found out then that it didn't like high viz vests. Luckily he had it under control.

When owners came in to apologizes they said that it had been abused by a postal worker when it was a pup. My boss said it wasn't the dogs fault, it was theirs, for allowing someone to take it out who couldn't control it.

Well thats b*ll*cks, dogs dont see a good range of colours so sounds like the owner is fibbing. If the owner also knew there were problems with the dogs temperment it makes you wonder why it wasnt muzzled.

Um, if I showed you a black and white picture of someone in a hi-vis vest, do you think you could still tell it was a hi-vis vest? I think you could. I watch a B/W TV, and I can easily tell when poeple are wearing hi-vis.

Otherwise, yes, if an owner knows their dog has problems, they should act accordingly. But you might be surprised what little cues animals can pick up on and act on, seemingly irrationally. I know someone who had a rescue cat who'd been abused and she was terrified of a certain build of man at first - not big, menacing blokes, but slight, lightly spoken blokes. It took a while to settle her down, and we had to assume that the person who kicked her had been a lightly built, lightly spoken bloke.
