The Virtuoso is a very good bike in its price range IMO, just the size that's the issue, so if you get the medium I reckon you'll be happy with it.

In answer to the original question, yes, it gets less scary, get used to it and you'll curse how lazy the handling of the MTB is!

I have a medium Virtuoso and I'm 5.10. The 58cm bike that I tried before and purchased on eBay (and have since sold) felt way too big. The medium is perfect for me.

Be interested to hear what you think about the Virtuoso chonkers, I've had mine a couple of weeks and so far opportunities to go out properly have been severely limited for one reason or another.

From what I've observed so far when on the bike it feels very responsive but also very different to the Trek hybrid I have for general usage. I couldn't get out today so spent a couple of hours fitting my Cateye wireless computer this afternoon and replaced the stock tyres with blue Continental Ultrasports which finishes off the look very nicely! All of this took place in the sunshine, so here's hoping tomorrow is dry at least

the guy in shop said use for a week see how it feels etc if still not happy come back and they would order me a med size one have to say they were a lot more helpful than the guy on fri and didnt charge for stem
looking forward to work for the next week and see how it goes just hope the roads are quiet.

They sound quite helpful, though if they've offered a medium I would probably be inclined to take them up on it and you'll probably find you feel much more in control of the bike.

Oh and yes the standard pedals aren't very good. I have changed mine for another pair of cages, but metal ones, with straps, as not quite ready for the full clipless though its on the horizon.

Let us know how you get on!
