Bear in mind that geometry in real life can vary from the spec sheet so don't place too much faith in what the bike looks like on paper.
Thanks again for all your input vickster. I dont remember my old Spec Secteur 56 frame giving me any grief. I always thought my Racelight was a little big when I bought it but it was too good to miss. I will admit there is an element of the new shiny bike syndrome.Evans don't sell cube. Cycle surgery do I think
Could try a Cannondale synapse disc?
I don't think 8mm would make much difference, easily rectified with a shorter stem. Something else must make the Kinesis untenable IMO
Thanks that Whyte is superb will take a closer look.

herewith a few examples after a brief look at ebay .... I have not checked sizes but it's merely an example of what can be bought if you are patient. None of these have disk brakes though: .... The Scott Foil looks like a really good buy for someone who will fit on it, but it needs to be checked properly as there are some paint chips

If he searches ebay, I'm sure that he will find one with disk brakes and that fits, and that will be a much better bike than anything new for his budget
How will he know that it fits?
The general principle of buying second-hand to pick up a bargain is sound, but it's like you haven't paid the slightest attention to any part of the discussion beyond the budget.
Carbon not great for proper mudguards or pannier rack if required for commuting
