I've bought 5 bikes via ebay, sold one (this morning in fact) and bought quite a lot of cycling related bits. I've bought and sold almost 500 items in total and of those deals I've only had one poor experience (but he was a 1st class p***k) The key is to use your common sense, check the sellers feedback for their buying or selling of related items which may indicate a hobby. Collect high value items with cash, if it's not as described walk away but the chances are all will be well. Ebay can be good fun and save you a few quid, sometimes you can even make money reselling an item but best of all it gives you access to just about anything you might want. My other interests are HI-FI, and stupid sports cars, and the stuff I've found on ebay is amazing!
As others have said sellers like highonbikes are very good, I often use sellers such as them because it's simply eaiser than leaving the house!
