What about Liam Neesons wife? OK she wasn't cycling but she fell over and took a bump to the head (easily done on a bike). Every single medical person who had anything to say on the matter (neurologists too I might add) said that a helmet would more than likely have saved her life.

To me, that's the end of the argument right there.

OK,

I now have my crap excuse for not wearing a helmet. Cheers Drago

It's because they smell funny.

That's the end of the argument relating to wearing a helmet when not cycling.

Yes, wether we like it or not we follow trends, if one day people started wearing helmets in cars it would catch on eventually. We are all influenced every single day of our lives! But anyway this is starting to go off topic.
Proof the enlightenment never reached Glasgow?
Don't you find your statement deeply depressing?
We bow to you superior knowledge, o London man, here from the back of beyond.
Like Aiden, I would conform just to make a loved one happy, after all helmet wearing is not a big deal.
Hey, I hide from my lbs when I'm not wearing a helmut, 'cause I know all 3 of them disapprove.
It is not so important to me that I must stress every minute that it is a choice.

Thats the same London that not long ago smashed up its own city?

Team, this is so easy.

Some of us like helmets cos we think it helps prevent head injuries in a spill. Dandy.

Some of us don't wear helmets. Fine.

Does it matter to us helmet wearers that some folks don't wear them? I personally think everyone should wear them, but what does it have to do with me if they don't? Not a lot really.

Does it matter to the naked head cyclists if me and my chums wear lids? Not one jot.

So why all the grief?

Perhaps we could all compromise and each wear half a helmet, meet in the middle. Or wear helmets every other day.

There are loads of similar stories, often involving one punch in a conflict. Do these mean that we are agreed that helmets should be worn by everyone all of the time?

I love that this is the best counter argument and is constantly repeated. To say everyone should wear a helmet all of the time is just plain crass. Cycling is a specific thing you do, some of the time, an activity where you travel, at speed, unprotected next to fast moving traffic a few feet from the ground, spills and falls are commonplace. Completely different to sitting in a boardroom drinking coffee. Seriously, come up with a better argument, even the mushroom head one is better than that.

The helmet didn't help you when you were run over by a few CC'ers on the track at Manchester - did someone get your head and back ?

Now now  , I have previously stated that the only time I do wear one is on the track. I am pleased to report that ocassion no one ran over my head however they did run over most other body parts :B)

Opinion (even the opinion of a medical professional) does not equal evidence.
Unless you were to precisely recreate the circumstances of the accident with a helmet, it's impossible to say for sure whether or not a helmet would have saved her. I would point out that cycle helmets are really only designed to be of any use in relatively low energy impacts.

The evidence is equivocal at best. That is, there isn't any evidence to show that helmets are significantly effective at reducing head injuries.

Also, you are at a similar risk just being a pedestrian, so why are you not also suggesting that pedestrians wear helmets? That's simply not logically consistent.

You should have had full body armour ! I can't talk though, I fell off at the other side slowing down avoiding the pile up - skinned both elbows - should have had elbow pads.

I believe that it was you that bought up the Liam Nielsens wife anology. Is that the best you can do ? Was she commuting ?
