Yes, coffee is not good for me. When I lived in UK, I would drink far too much - both from Costa and from instant in the office. It gave me a buzz that if I over-dosed turned into irritability. Ironically, coming to Italy has cured my coffee problem. Italian coffee is very strong, but in small doses. i will drink 3-4 espressos through the working day from the coffee shop close to the office and I know that my irritability through caffeine overdosing is under control.

I had the shakes yesterday and felt high too, almost drunk, giddy and light-headed. My hands were trembling and I couldn't work out why ... until I realised I'd had 2 cups of real coffee and a Coke instead of my usual decaf.

A friend of mine decided to go the decaf route ... however it seems to have left her even more vulnerable to the effects of caffeine on those occasions when she accidentally has some.

Useful responses one and all. Some responses in no particular order...

I've considered relaxation and/or meditation before. The misses thinks I could do with it, and certainly my finger nails would thank me! Perhaps I should pursue the idea. Oddly, it would suit me. I am naturally (i.e. when calmed down) a chilled and easy going person, and I do believe in all that 'touchy feely' crap!

I do also believe we all have different sensitivities. The coffee's strength is obviously a factor. At a guess, I'd say my 5 small cups equates to maybe 4 espressos as maybe made by your favourite barista. Not shed loads but a fair amount per day. I don't drink any soft drinks (caffeinated or otherwise) at all, and my increased coffee intake is at the cost of green tea. I used to (couple of months back) drink only coffee or green tea (water and some milk excluded). Green tea also contains caffeine, albeit it not on quite the same quantities.

I'm back on the green tea now (day 2), perhaps the caffeine intake there will diminish any withdrawal symptoms from coffee. The big test will come at 11 - that's when the misses puts the coffee pot on. She needs her fix!

If you're drinking 5 small cups of french coffee, being in France, then you will be on the ceiling. Cut out coffee altogether and you will feel so much better once you've got over the withdrawl ...........

I think I'd fit in with Summerdays description - I have one double espresso on a morning when I work at home and no other coffee usually but if I miss that then I'll get a weak fuzzy 'headache'. But if I'm working in other people's offices or generally away from home I'll have a lot more coffee - travelling is the worst - coffee on the train, coffee in the station, coffee with a sandwich etc. etc. but it tends just to make my stomach feel a bit abused rather than my head. Certainly I can have a double espresso after dinner and have no problems sleeping.
