I've used a camelbak for years ('cos I mostly mtb) and find them very useful in carrying 3L of water, multi tool, pump, tube, patches, levers, spoke key, first aid, rain coat, wallet and extra food if on longer rides (+4hrs).

Phone, ipod and on-the-go food go in the jersey pockets.

Being the lady what I am, I've been told I couldn't pack light if the house was on fire
I have a cycling top but the pockets seem very inadequate!

Call me <insert your choice here> but I used to carry a rucksack which held a spare tube/kit/pump plus a waterproof jacket (if I wasn't wearing it) a couple of snacks/drink plus a First Aid kit.
This was for a ride of about 15 miles.

Do you use a rucksack and what do you carry?

Yes, I carry binos if im mtb'ing. Otherwise I have no need for a rucksack.

Only for my commute. Change of clothing etc

For leisure rides a saddle bag and/or just jersey pocket are suffice.

Small saddlebag with tube, p.....e repair kit, tyre levers, multi tool, chain tool, waterproof and neoprene gloves. In the pockets on my top I carry phone, gel and a fiver. Like others a small back pack if I need my lock and to carry any thing I might buy.

Only use a rucksack when absolutely necessary (sweaty back xx() - my hybrid has a rack pack with my tools, spare tubes, p.repair kit, baby wipes and spare batteries, plus wallet and phone and waterproofs etc as necessary, panniers if grocery shopping etc, and the d-lock and pump secured to the bike. The road bike has a large Ortleib sadle bag which contains tools n tubes, p.repair kit, small lock, first aid kit, wipes and batteries, plus wallet and phone and can fit a jacket if need be. Pump secured to the bike. Also have a bag to go on the top tube which can take tools, repair kit, lock, camera, wallet, batteries, wipes if I need to take sandwiches in the saddlebag.

It all depends on the ride... If I'm out solo on the MTB, I tend to take more stuff (pump, spare tube, scabs, cash, ID, spare chain link, Crankbrother multitool). Solo on the roadbike, it's similar minus the pump as I take the CO2 kit and that'll fit into a small Topeak under the saddle or into the back pockets of my top.
If there's a few of us out and about, we share spares etc and manage to travel quite light.

Edit: If I'm off down the shops or into town though, I take a rucksack so I can fill it full of shopping, library books, beer etc

I got a wee rucksack from Aldi a while back that I put my phone, keys, wallet and a very light extra layer in and I use this one for weekend/evening jaunts. I may throw a banana or choccy bar in there too.

My "go to work" rucksack is an industrial strength ex-German military one I found in the back of a truck many years ago and I use it when I have to carry in coffee, sugar, packets of biscuits, bits of broken motorbike and so on and so forth. I'm glad my ride to work is a mere 1.1 mile pootle up the road.

Not sure why you'd need a couple of snacks for a ride of 15 miles? I'd just have water on that distance ride. Personally I don't see the need for a snack on anything under 30 miles or so. First aid kit I guess could come in handy. I just use a saddle bag and back pockets, to carry pump, levers, couple of tubes, multi tool, mobile phone, and puncture repair kit.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
For commuting i use 2 panniers.
side one has work clothes and sarnies with rainlegs in side pocket
side 2 has multi tool, pump, inner tubes, tyre levers, keys etc , windproof with overshoes in pocket.

For the leisure ride i use jersey pockets along with a saddle bag for spares along with an old water bottle with the top cut off to stow a gilet/windproof as this time of year 1 bottle and a cake stop will get me through 60-70 miles.

I don't either, but I always have something with me just in case, rack and bag with drop down panniers, can carry an all sort ment of stuff if need be, rucksack never unless very short ride to town, and then the panniers will usually do the job.
