Being the lady what I am, I've been told I couldn't pack light if the house was on fire
I have a cycling top but the pockets seem very inadequate!

Call me <insert your choice here> but I used to carry a rucksack which held a spare tube/kit/pump plus a waterproof jacket (if I wasn't wearing it) a couple of snacks/drink plus a First Aid kit.
This was for a ride of about 15 miles.

Do you use a rucksack and what do you carry?

No

Saddle bag and if required either a triangle bag that goes in the frame or a Tri bag that sits on the top tube.

I use one when I'm on the road bike. I've got panniers and a lock mount on the other. I won't go further than 5 miles without the full puncture repair kit but if I'm on the road bike, I'll usually have a D-lock on my back as well.

Only ever used a rucksack when I could commute. Tried panniers but didn't get on with them for some reason.

Any weekend rides I might do don't require one.

I have a small under saddle pack with a tube, levers and zip ties in, and in my jersey pockets I have:
  • CO2 pump and a couple of cannisters
  • Another spare tube (I'm always a bit paranoid!)
  • Multitool wrapped in a small cloth, (cloth for wiping hands)
  • Phone
  • Little bit of loose change

Only if I'm locking the bike up on my rides it's in the jersey on the frame or in the saddle bag. I carry a topeak tool kit, tube, waterproof, spanner, money keys plasters etc in saddlebag. Mini pump is on the frame, gels banana flapjack in the jersey and phone is mounted on the bars

In my saddlebag I always carry a multitool, a better multitool, a puncture repair kit and a set of lights. I carry my phone keys and wallet in my cycling top pockets. If I'm going out and need to stop I'll carry a bag with a lock in it as usually I'll be filling the bag up with something or other later on. Cadet days are the worst... so many things, so little space in which to cram them...

I carry a rucksack when commuting. I do take a spare set of work clothes in the day before, to limit the amount I have to carry, but yesterday, I had to take in/back my work laptop plus my clothes from yesterday... Too heavy...

Not if I can help it as I find it very sweaty on my back. Seat bag with tyre levers, 2 tubes, puncture kit, hex keys, screwdriver. Pump on my frame. Waterproof coat rolled up in my jersey pockets.

Best bike has a medium saddle bag for spares, phone and cash. Food in back pockets and pump strapped under one of the bottle cages. (1 mile to 60 miles)

Hybrid has rack and pannier permanently attached. Work rucksack pops inside the waterproof pannier, which makes it easy to carry around town.
I tried just a rucksack, but my commute is long and the weight heavy , always end up with sore shoulders and a wet/sweaty back.

It depends. I always have a little saddle bag, which I keep a tube, puncture repair kit, small set of tools, a set of lights and a bit of money in. I carry a bottle on my bike and a pump in my back pocket. If I'm going somewhere where I'll need to leave my bike, I carry my locks and other bits and bobs in a small Deuter backpack which I love. It's light compact and doesn't make me sweat too much. It has pockets on the side that I can ram all sorts in and little loops on the outside that I can lock my lock through if my bag is full. If I had a pannier I'd presume that someone would try and steal/vandalise it while the bike is locked up. The less I have to take on and off the bike when I lock it up round here, where I wouldn't want to leave anything for 10 seconds in an ideal world, the better.

If that was for a 15 mile ride then I think you are going to need a trailer for anything substantial.
