Do rims get worn out?

Well do they? As a result of brake pads rubbing against them? Can they warp from getting too thin, or should they last a lifetime-ish?

Many nowadays have a groove cut into them that acts as a wear indicator, i.e. once the groove has all but disappeared you replace them.

So yes, they do wear.

Oh yes, one's rim can wear out. One should always keep one's rim nice and clean to extend rim life. And one should have one's rim inspected regularly to make sure it is in tip-top condition or if it requires replacement.

If you hold the edge of a credit card against the rim and hold it up to the light you can get some measure of how concave it has become. Calipers will of course give a more accurate measure.

With a badly worn rim there is always the possibility of a blowout when the tube is fully inflated, with disastrous consequences.

Beside the road
A few years ago I managed to put a brake block through a rim. There was this HUGE bang as the tyre / tube exploded and the rim was torn off the wheel.

After about 5 mins of lying in the middle of the road my hearing eventually returned and I realised I hadn't been shot.

ofcourse they weear out!! as do pads and discs.

with rims, they can be blown out byt the trye, resulting in instand deflation and also the sliver of rim can come whizzing out and turn into a rotaing knife slicing through legs and stuff.

so it is worth examining the rims regularly.

In my experience - never had a rim crack though had some close calls with cheapo stuff..but generally if you add the life and wear you've put onto one then you should be a good judge for that yourself.

Generally, with hard use roadwise you should get a year.

Off-road half that.

Depends how hard you brake, whether you ride on wet, gravelly roads and <ahem> how thick your rims are. The heavy duty rims on my tourer are coming to the end of their life after 5 years and approx 10,000 miles...
