One of the few really poisonous spiders in this country is the black widow. One of their favorite haunts is underneath outhouse seats. I have used a few and also the restrooms found by camping sites, also beloved by flies. Makes for caution.

We stayed for four days in a remote wooden cabin on a small island off the coast of British Columbia. It had a well and an outhouse with a short drop composting toilet. We didn't linger in the outhouse. The year before, the owner said she looked down into the latrine and there was a cougar staring back at her.
