Not sure I quite agree with that, I have become quite attached to my bike over the years upgrades have been done as things have broken or worn out i,e, shifters from 9sp Sora to 10sp 105 when the right shifter failed, bars when a thread got stripped in the original head set (I got an oversize headset by mistake) and what a difference to riding on the drops they made, cover 5,000+ miles a years there is usually something that needs replacing once in a while and i take that opportunity to put a little better kit on the bike if I can afford it.
That sounds a lot like maintenance. The upgrades bunnies are easy to spot. They start threads like " What wheels should I get?"

I started one last week but it was more about rim/hub set for durability, I ended up with these off a friend, Ultegra hubs and Exal XR1 rims Sapim double butted spokes, 36 spokes 3 cross
its not been so bad since I upgraded the shifters to 105's in July 2014, its mainly chains at about 3,000 miles likewise the brake blocks, tyres upto 12,000 front and rear 7,000, I suspect next new chain I will need a new 12-27 cassette but admittedly the last 12 months the mileage has been down, though a lot of that was because I had to keep costs to a minimum and I knew certain things needed doing chain, brakes, tyres.

Like I said I shouldn't have titled the thread "upgrade" all the parts I have replaced to date have been down to failures or uneconomical repair bills.

My wheels got destroyed by a pothole I swerved to avoid a car who wasn't paying attention and ended up wrecking my wheels, the E4P wheels weren't great anyway so I spoke to the local shop explained I needed them replaced and I wanted something a little more durable.

My brakes are and have always been horrible, I spend more time adjusting the brakes than anything else, as stopping/slowing is kind of important I really wanted to improve these from a safety point of view, they're just too inconsistent I have zero confidence in them at the moment, I have serviced them myself and the shop has as well but they're just a cheap budget brake.

If someone could confirm if the TRP's are good for a hybrid with straight handle bars it would really be appreciated.

If it's a hybrid then don't bother with mechanical discs, just find a cheap pair of Shimano Hydraulics. If you shop round, you should find some Shimano Acera M395 or some bargain Deore brakes for less than the cost of BB7s, and they really are fit and forget (apart from checking pad wear)

TRP Spyres are designed to be used with short pull brake levers. You'd need Spykes instead.

I don't know about disc brakes, but using Koolstop on the calipers made a big difference and what is but an upgrade over stock brake blocks.
I had the same problem with lower end RD's though Sora isn't the bottom, I don't have the same problems with the 105 RD, its like I said more replacement than upgrade as the difference when get new replacements in that sort of group range isn't that great.

Aaaah, the good old upgrade bug. Silly pursuit that. Forever chasing Nirvana and never quite catching it. May I suggest you forget about the bike, go for some nice rides, take photos and drink beer? I don't understand how the brakes suddenly need more and more maintenance. Are you BSing yourself? Don't.

There's truth in that.
However, sometimes it's just nice to improve something on your bike, if only to enjoy the placebo effect it produces. I upgraded my wheels because I thought the new ones look nicer. Sometimes upgrades aren't really upgrades, but modifications to improve the bike to be more suitable for it's use. Round here I put lower gears on to help with the hills for example.

Hi I thought the Spykes are for mountain bikes?

The levers I have are very short if it helps, they don't go anywhere near the end of the bars, they almost look like road levers but horizontal.

For the price of BB7s you could go hydraulic

Im not sure why everyone is recommending mechanical Discs.
Hydraulic brakes are really fit and forget. Didn't have to adjust my XTR´s in 2 years I have been running them.
Hydro brakes also offer you better modulation and less required effort for braking.
You can get decent brand new Shimano Hydro`s M315 for 39.57£ for front and rear.
+ 7.60£ for shipping

Im from Germany so in a UK shop you might find cheaper alternatives as you can save on shipping charges.
