Don't drink diet drinks to be honest, far too much ambiguity over the health risks of Aspartame. Would rather consume lots of sugar in normal versions which has a net result of fattening.
If you're in training, then the odd can of full sugar iron bru will be completely fine. It really isn't a big deal. At the moment I'm in training for a 50 mile fell run and a half iron man, coke is my vice, i crave it after a tough day. So long as the rest of the nutrition plan is good, then go for it.

What's the worry about ascorbic acid ? After all you won't cycle far (or live long, for that matter) without a minimum level of ascorbic acid (AKA vitamin C) in your system.
Likewise caffeine - some can take it, some can't but if that's the worst of Coke, then I reckon you're OK
its the acid that destroys the teeth not the sugar. Ok its not helping to preserve teeth but its not as bad as you think. diet pop is as bad for your teeth as full fat pop.
one can every now and again isn't gonna kill you. unless its thrown at you while you ride.
as for the lettuce and explosive poops , i think the dodgy sausages at the BBQ might have done that
Full sugar version for me please. The diet Coke never tasted quite the same to me. I don't drink that much Coke anymore but I still I still love it, especially with ice.
