The 10 speed cassette on my new bike appears to be in two halves the first five close together and then a jump to a larger cog. Only this first of the larger ones makes a noise. I have a feeling that it is to do with being on the large chain ring although I am not sure. Do I have a mechanical problem or do I need to learn a new gear changing sequence? I am not new to cycling but Ihave been riding fixed for the last few years.

Are you saying the noise is being produced when in gear 1 on the rear (RHS shifter) and your highest at the front (LHS shifter)? If so, this is normal.

The sound is due to the fact that the chain is running at a fairly extreme angle, and it will often rub on the inner side of the front derailleur. Try not to use these extreme chain angles - The same goes for running your highest gear at the back, and lowest at the front - As they accelerate wear on your drive chain components, as well as make horrible noises.
