With the girls now having bikes that will cost more to replace than I paid for them, I want to get them each a reasonably decent bike lock. Trouble is, I can see those two losing keys so ideally I want to get them combination locks.

I've seen the Magnum OnGuard 8012C for about £20 a pop. It doesn't say it's Sold Secure, but the Magnum security rating is the same as the equivalent keyed lock, which is apparently rated Silver.

Are these okay, or can anyone recommend a decent but not too expensive combination lock?

Combinations are rubbish . Not very secure . That's why not rated by sold secure. You will be surprised how responsible kids can be with keys. My 2 were. I think it helped them.

Do they lose their phones?

If they DO, then I can see the problem!

If they DON'T then they are clearly capable of not losing things. If necessary, attach the keys to the phones!

(But cheap, convenient locks don't do much good anyway. Only the most casual of casual thieves would be incapable of cutting off any such lock.)

As the old saying about locks (and other bicycle-related paraphernalia) goes: you can have any 2 out of strong, cheap and light.

you done good.

I had my bike locked up by someone who forgot the combination. While he was looking for wire cutters, a third friend went all safe-breakery on the combination. Unlocked it in less than a minute.

Kryptonite offer free replacement key, and infinite not-free keys. 5 should do the trick.

On the general subject of On Guard locks I get the impression they are pretty decent. True? Often available discounted through offers highlighted here and eksewhere. I use one, with another one from a different brand, around London. I like their design/plastic shielding for the bike frame.

I went for the OnGuard Brute for even more security, but TBH - it is so damn heavy, you would not want to carry it far!
I just used it on a trip to the shops and it didn't feel too bad bungeed to the rack there and back. I could feel the weight and would put up with it for (say) 10 miles but I will not be taking it with me on my hilly forum rides!

There are a few reviews where people complain about the locks jamming. I haven't had mine long enough to suffer any problems yet.

The (Brute) lock itself is very chunky. Both ends of the shackle are locked so it would need to be cut twice to get it off. It should defeat most bolt cutters. A cutting disk takes more than a minute to cut one side according to the test videos that I found. If that is the case then somebody would have to spend nearly 2.5 minutes cutting the lock off. Maybe worth risking in a dark back alley, but hopefully enough deterrent for a well-lit public place.

I went for the version with a shorter shackle to save weight and so there was less room to get tools inside, and I locate one crank inside to fill even more space. If you want to lock 2 bikes together or to lock to bigger objects then buy the version with the long shackle.
