Not really. How could it be any easier that plugging your Garmin into your laptop?! Can't you not still just take the file from the Garmin if you wish? I can understand this may be a pita if not uploading to your own computer and not having the sync setup.
By configuring wifi on an Edge 1000 and never needing the unit to be plugged into a pc
How come you have to use garmin express to upload to strava now , pain in the hass !

You would have to get the angle right or the bike could take off Donger ^_^
You think you jest, @Banjo........ The one in the photo is my bar bag with a map on top. My other one is just a lightweight map-holder. At speeds in excess of 30mph, I swear it becomes an aerofoil. Came down a big hill a few weeks ago and felt how the Wright brothers must have felt at Kittyhawk.

If you can get it, Here Maps allows maps to be downloaded to your phone, and will navigate fully offline. The only thing I can't tell you is whether it includes bikerouting or not.

No.1 son has used it for finding his way around Berlin and Geneva fairly recently, using the walking directions, and Mrs M used it on her last trip to London, again, for walking directions.
Been very happy with HERE, though I mostly use STRAVA for records and Map My Ride for planning. I still have the DeLorme Atlases for my state(Illinois) and everything west to South Dakota, as well as lensatic compass and mapmeter. That's my doomsday backup, along with my Olympus OM-2 and a few rolls of hideously out of date Ilford FP-4 (accept no substitutes) and maybe an ancient bottle of Rodinal for pictures.

hi - digging this thread up cos my wife has invested some backpay in one of these Garmin Edge 1000 and now we are in a weird loop trying to connect said gadget to our wifi in the house. The gadget says on its screen use garmin express to conenct to wifi, but when I download / install and open garmin EXPRESS it says the device is not connected .. even though it IS ..

<sigh>

any ideas?

Assuming windows, Control Panel, Add New Hardware. See if that'll find it for the system.

Hi
basically this was the issue, we had to change the device at the shop this week, due to the original failing to charge, so we had to unistall the old one and re-install the facts for the new one and it is working now .. we think! We ues their software, garmin express to do that

Thanks

I don't really bother with Strava, but on the odd occasion I have I just used a basic GPS logger on my phone, and uploaded the resulting track file to Strava. Could hardly have been easier!

I think I had an issue initially connecting mine to the PC. I think I just plugged it in to a different USB port. It really shouldn't make any difference, but it seemed to work.

Now it's set up for WiFi I never connect it to the PC. I just set the Garmin to sync rides automatically each time it picks up my home Wifi.

I go with the phone app. I use my old original Moto G which has really good battery performance with the smaller screen (still big by G810 standards). I carry a small Anker recharger for stops on really long rides (100+). Its free, there are good mounts, and it isn't a tragedy if it gets smashed or stolen. And, of course you are free to choose and move to the best navigator/tracker app of the day.

You don't really need a SIM if you pre-load the maps with wifi. Or if you do then a Three 3-2-1 payg sim is only 1p a megabyte if you have to navigate out of trouble. Otherwise tether it to your current phone in your back pocket to piggy back its data connection.

I'm really a map man but you maps are rarely good enough when navigating through an unknown continental city. Turn on the bar mounted phone and you get a better quality map than Garmin. Better still, a choice of maps!
