I'm about the same age as your dad and just bought myself and old raleigh from ebay, first drop handled bike i've had since i was 17 . After spending a few pounds on new chain, handlebar tape and bearings it has cost me the grand sum of £60! It will do me until at least the spring to decide if I want to spend £5-600 pounds on a new one. Its also great fun getting it back on the road (although it was already ridable).

If 49 is old then I have only a year until I am old as well. Got a drop bar Raleigh rescued from a skip. Which after a bit of work and a few quid is now back on road and a specalized sirrus which I use most days to commute around trip of 25 miles and I love it paid 350 for it from Evans
