Until it breaks after 10 minutes. Most un-reliable cars ever.

Yeah I have heard that too. I know a number of people who have had either niggling problems or long-running re-occurring problems. One person I know however had zero problems (like. not even a tiny little thing). But generally, yes, they are notorious.

I've heard horrible stories of paint loss and rust on white ones. Only white ones, apparently.

Otherwise, they're cheap Renaults in the way Skodas were once cheap VWs. Skodas aren't cheap any more, though.

I was in two Skoda fabias today both 12 plate and I reckon the quality wasn't any better than my 02 polo. One sounded noisier!

I think a 12 plate polo would be a good deal higher quality tbh.

Never buy a white or silver car as it's the colour that's cheapest to paint from a grey primer.

Once had a ford focus in silver and you could see the primer coming through the fag paper thin paint. Much better a deep darker colour.

The first gen Fabia and Octavia were stunning value, and no worse than the VW equivalents. Skoda isn't a cheap brand now, though.

I think the last true Skoda with no VW input was the Favorit.

Nope defo not cheap now . Kia similar start in life as brand make some nice looking cars . Same with Hyundai. My wife has a Hyundai it was heap however looking at them now !! Different looking cars altogether.

All the mechanicals and switchgear is well tested on former Renault models so reliability is very good.
The interior finishing is basic and less plush than more expensive cars, but it's all well put together and certainly doesn't feel bargain basement. Yes, slightly noisier, but not an issue.
My summation is that they're reliable, cheap to own and run, comfortable, and competent - does everything well enough without fuss.
I'd consider a Dacia Duster as a no-frills car. Light, decent engines, oddly reliable for a Renault, no unnecessary "driver aids", robustly built and economical to own.

The newer generation is more opulent (well OK, not opulent, but you get the drift!) but after a drive my wife couldn't see herself in one, so no-go.

As an aside, they are just about to launch their first mild hybrid in the Logan.

the new models do look half decent , not blingy but certainly better than they were when they 1st came out , they are double in price though

A neighbour has just bought a new Dacia to transport his three lanky greyhounds. He was on his driveway installing blankets and other creature comforts for the dogs when I spoke to him. I hadn't seen that particular model up close before and, as he closed the boot, I noticed it was a 'Jogger'. "Perhaps", I started to say, "Dogger" would be more appropriate?" - and we both realised the double entendre at the same time.
It looks to be well suited to whatever use you choose to put it

We used to own a '03' plate Fabia estate, bought new, & (to all intents & purposes) driven off the showroom floor
A couple of years later, wifes brother (& his g/f) had a '05' Polo, & I drove it, the Fabia was a way better car in all respects
Not driven a newer Polo, or Golf

I owned an Octavia estate, between March 2012 & May 2021, & I still contend that it's the best value/all-rounder that I've ever driven/used/owned

It was replaced with a Kodiaq (2.0Tdi/6-speed manual/4x4/5-seater), if wife hadn't wanted another BWSOW, I'd probably still have the Octavia, but she wanted a bigger caravan that it could safely cope with

I was half heartedly looking at new or nearly new Stepways a couple of months ago.

After having driven new one (0.9 turbo TCe) and looking at two others (one of which had an inch of water sloshing round the rear footwells, on a year old car!!!) I, for reasons too numerous to list without crashing the forum, bought a 30,000 mile used 2008 instead.

Shame, because I really wanted to believe but with what I saw, touched and drove I just couldnt make the leap.
