Most of us think that the position doesn't look quite right, however, getting back to the original question ...

I've more often had arm and shoulder problems cycling when a poor position has led to me putting too much weight on them, but the upright position depicted surely puts less weight on the OP's upper body? I'd have expected a sore bum to be more likely.

Actually, (answering my own question, after looking at the photos again ...) having elbows locked is going to transmit more road shock up through them to the shoulders, than having a bend in them which allows the arm muscles to act as shock absorbers.

been out today 33miles , bearing in mind my body positioning and didnt get as much shoulder cramp, i did get it but only for about 10mins.
I think the posture i sent the pic of may be a bit out because it was hard to balance myself on the bike for a picture. didnt feel natural.
but thanks for the advice everyone.
