Looked very nasty as I rode past about 8:40pm this evening. Whole road closed, lots of police cars. Peugeot 206 with smashed windscreen on driver's side just the sort of damage to be caused by a head hitting it. Ladies black bike with a whicker basket was mashed lying forlornly in the nearside gutter. Several teams of scenes of crime officers thoroughly searching the area and marking out where things lay. There was a lot of debris across the road, personal affects. Quite sobering really.

Hope the cyclist lives as their bike was badly damaged as far as I could see.

Thank goodness they've removed the comment function on that page. I looked this morning and there were already two comments, one of which mentioned the lack of a helmet. It then went on to say something like "lots of cyclists in Cambridge don't have lights so I wouldn't be surprised if this one didn't too". The CEN comments just get flooded with petrolhead haters.

Edit: RIP of course. Very, very sad.

A horrible tragedy. For the press and general public it will have a particularly emotive impact as the victim was a 16-year old girl, and it would only add to the awfulness if it fuelled a bout of 'cycling is unsafe'/'get your children off their bikes' ranting. Cambridge comes nearer to a 'normal' cycling culture than anywhere else I've seen in the UK, and it is exactly these 'ordinary', non-sporting riders that we should be encouraging to come out onto the roads in their droves. Every such death is a personal catastrophe, but let us hope that if any lessons are to be learnt, they will be the right and not the wrong ones.

I felt most upset over this when I heard it on the news last night and it has affected me deeply even though I don't know the child. I couldn't even face going out on my bike this morning and I don't even live in Cambridge. Maybe it triggers subconciously memories of my niece who was killed cycling a few days before Christmas when she was 13 years old. My sister's husband was a serving RAF member at RAF Lyneham (edited, I incorrectly stated RAF Brize Norton)and his daughter was cycling home with her brother. They were on the base. He turned right into their turning, she followed and didn't see the car behind her that hit her. I can't recall the exact year but it was a good 20 odd years ago and just occasionally I am reminded of it, and the devastation it causes those left behind to pick up the pieces.

RIP for the girl and thoughts for her family and friends.

Don't know what to say. Its not right. Especially to someone so young. My sincerest condolences to family and friends. I spent a few moments thinking what to write. But what can we say to make things better. Sometimes.... Ya know what can you say? Just makes me speechless.

Someone mentioned the comments section was closed due to the silly posts sprouting up. Those posts are pathetic.

Compo, even though it happened many years ago, I'm sorry to hear about your niece.

Awful news that she died. I ride up that road every day. Despite it being a major cycle route it can still be frickin' dangerous as car drivers don't give a fig about cyclists going out of Cambridge. Not so bad going in as there is a bus lane to ride down until Union Lane. Her bike was a black ladies sit up and beg bike with whicker basket. It was pretty badly mashed last night when I rode past it. The windscreen of the Peugoet 206 was smashed where her head might have hit it. It looked just like one I examined many moons ago when working in that line of work where a cyclist was a victim of a hit and run and died as a result. She only lived about 1/2 - 1 mile away from where she lost her life. So awful, no time is good to lose such a young life and just before Christmas. RIP.
