Invest in a bright front light if you are riding on unlit roads. There are plenty of gvfm lights and lots of reviews and recommendations on here.
Also make sure your kit has some reflective bits on.

I use a total of. 5 lights , 2 on the front that flash and have 3 rear lights , one on the seat post , one on my helmet and the last one my right arm all of them flashing. remember if your going out at daylight and riding into the night I carry 2 sets of glasses dark set for daylight and a clear set for night rides .. I'd also recommend carrying a spare tube nothing worse trying to fix a puncture in the dark ... Lastly Enjoy and stay safe ..

That's my plan starting week Tuesday, have to be a taxi for a couple of overseas people this next week.

Riding in the dark is brilliant. Try doing the ride in a morning and not at night at first, that way you know it is going to get lighter if you find it over daunting. Seeing the sun rising whilst you are cycling on your own in the middle of nowhere is an event every cyclist should experience.

All good advice above.
The first time I got some decent lights and went out at night it was a revelation. Love riding when it's dark especially in the country where it really is dark. I stopped once on a downhill, under the tree canopy and turned everything off, even after letting my eyes get accustomed to the dark it was still as black as pitch. I did get spooked when I heard a snuffling and soft growling just the other side of the hedge. So naturally I turned my lights back on and pointed it through the hedge to see what it was pissed off as fast as I could.
