Cycling causing stress?

Sounds to me like over training - doing too much too soon.It is the inability to recover from the cycling rather than the cycling itself I am guessing.
It is important that he replenishes his glycogen store within two hours of completing his ride. As you are on holiday and maybe camping (I don't know) get some of that Ambrosia rice in a tin and get him to eat one of those straight from the tin. If you have access to a kitchen you can get some quality carbs down him - not sugar - complex carbohydrates.

No disrespect to the OP's hubby, but he's doing 11 mile rides. He isn't overtraining.

To clarify Hip Priest, he does 11 miles at home on the flat, almost daily with no problems. The problem is whilst we are on holiday, he is doing more miles and the hills are quite steep. At the end of the drive to get on the road it is 1:4 but only for about 20 yards or so. On return, it is still very hilly and I can't see an opportunity to "wind down". I might suggest that he puts the bike in the car to drive to a more suitable location. But I think there is a "man" thing going on here. No disrespect ^_^

Your snarky response is unwarranted. I was merely pointing out to aceejay that 'overtraining' is not the cause of your husband's issues. Overtraining is something that happens to pro athletes, or very serious amateurs. The rest of us might get tired from time to time, but that's not the same thing.

Apologies Hip Priest, snarky is the last thing I intend. We are both newbies with no local support so anything here is of value.

I used to feel rather peculiar after longer rides when I first started
Almost like my body wanted to explode after about an hours rest
But as I've ridden more I no longer suffer

If your really concerned maybe ring the nhs helpline

Hope alls ok in the end and it's just the extra hilly bits

Thank you Spike on a Bike. Your reply is noted and I will take it on board. I have no idea what I said to cause offense, but I think it best that I abandon this thread. Thanks to everyone who gave constructive comments. I will follow them all up.

Pish: you said nothing to warrant such a response, maybe I am wrong but it was only a suggestion after all, it bothers me that I may in some way have caused you further distress.
When I said "over training" and qualified it by adding "doing too much too soon" I meant it exactly as you took it and no more.
Over training can happen to anyone who over stretches themselves regardless of their existing level of fitness and is just as likely to happen to
an Olympian as an amateur (especially one who has been bitten by the bug like your husband).

Thanks ayceejay and richardb, I thought I had breached some etiquette that I was unaware of. I was more puzzled than distressed. I am so relaxed you wouldn't believe......

I've forgotten my humanity? Wow. And here was me thinking I was just disagreeing with someone about the use of the term 'overtraining'.
