He works from home so we are together 24/7. I think the jump from 11 miles (most days) on the flat, to these hills are taking more out of him than he anticipated. He has only been cycling for about 5 months.

I bought my bike because of the effect that his has had on him. He comes back euphoric after a ride. He is euphoric here on holiday as well, the stress sets in afterwards. If he goes out again, we are here for another week, I will make sure he has something to eat and drink as soon as he gets back.

Does he take food and drink on his ride? Always a good idea to take something. I have 2 bottles of water on my bike and I take a bit of flapjack or a banana too, especially if I am cycling in a new area. I know all the hills around here, something different i.e. higher, longer, twistier, decent is going to make the body respond differently.

Odd that it should lead to more stress though. If anything a bit more exertion should be leaving him tired and happy.

Just cheer him up with reassurance about his fitness which I doubt is deteriorating during your hol. If all else fails... Ann summers!

Sounds to me like over training - doing too much too soon.It is the inability to recover from the cycling rather than the cycling itself I am guessing.
It is important that he replenishes his glycogen store within two hours of completing his ride. As you are on holiday and maybe camping (I don't know) get some of that Ambrosia rice in a tin and get him to eat one of those straight from the tin. If you have access to a kitchen you can get some quality carbs down him - not sugar - complex carbohydrates.

I think he might be worrying too much, as you say he has only been riding a few months, Cycling produces changes to the body systems, most for the better, some for the worst, but generally for the better.
If he come back and is relaxed and only starts fizzing a few hours later, it is that you should be looking at, Sounds like he could do to do some training down, he no doubt is pushing himself physically to improve his fitness, I would suggest that for the last 3 miles on his return from his ride, he rides at a slower rate, say 10Khm, to wind the body down, clear out the lactic acid from his muscle,s, and maybe munch on a mars bar to balance up his blood sugar levels. In time as his fitness improves he will or should not have these after ride effects. However if it continues I would suggest a visit to the Doctor,s

Sorry guys, internet connection is dodgy.
Husband is 55 and does not smoke or drink. Does not have restless leg syndrome. No racing pulse.

I have bought ambrosia rice, snickers bar (mars has malt and causes migraines), jelly babies and flapjacks. We are in a cottage so have a decent kitchen.

Thanks ayceejay and ticktockmy, I think you are both probably right.

I doubt diabetes. We have a diabetic dog so are pretty familiar with the symptoms. He had blood tests a few months ago which didn't show anything up.

Edit: Husband had the test, not the dog.
