2001- A Space Odessy was easily the most tedious film I've had the strength to endure but there was a Russian one of the same type that came pretty close. Blade Runner was good. All the rest of the genre bore me to death.

Edit: Alien was good.

Solaris is probably the one you're thinking of. There's an English remake which was actually pretty good.

Cube is great, and I'd say 12 Monkeys fits the bill too.

For me Interstellar is a great film (complete with the rather pleasant Anne Hathaway) which is totally ruined by Matthew McConnauchy mumbling the whole way through. Speak up man!

2001 probably the greatest as it makes people think. They set about deliberately creating more questions than answers.

Forbidden Planet - gorgeous 50's pulp SF and the inspiration for Star Trek a decade later.

Thought of a couple more: Colossal (needs several viewings) and Annihilation.

Crimes of the Future is really good too.

Oh, and eXistenZ.

eXistenZ is fantastic, I'm well overdue a rewatch on that.

12 Monkeys is a film that gets better the more you watch it, same with Cube.

How about Dark City? Similar in many ways to the Matrix and arguably better, enjoyable though the Matrix may be
