I use my iphone and MapMyRide which I like for short to medium distances, but it does drain the battery life. Was out 3 hrs 46 mins yesterday and was at 10% battery when I got back, so maybe time to invest in a computer myself ;)
This is the the big advantage, the Garmins up to 18hrs, the Bryton's cliam upto 35 hrs on some models.

I use my iphone with Strava and this pretty much does everything I could want it too and is a good motivational tool!

+1 same setup for my short journeys, will one day in the future (when fitness grows) upgrade to garmin 800/810.... plus need to save up a little to get this expensive stuff!

If your like me (always broke) by the time you save up you will know the local roads upto about 25-30 miles radius thats a lot of roads in most cases. So you wont need the mapping as such as you will know your way around.

This to be honest is my thought ,yes I could use my android smartphone but battery life is not brilliant, overall think I have made up my mind and I am going for the Garmin 200 unit which seems quite a good buy as features ect goes and does seem to give you the functions of a decent gps unit
thanks for all the advice think thats decision made

I got a Cateye Astrale 8 for Christmas and it is simple and works great for me. It was only about $30 USD.

Oops, I appear to have won an ebay auction. Better move some cash into the correct account to pay for it! I have 'won' a garmin 500 for £127

The amount of data you will get is bewildering, next will be the H.R and Sp/Cad.
A little tip, set the auto pause speed at 4mph or so, it helps the little wayward tracks at junctions (it does happen, though not with sp sensor), these happen because the gps plot can shift and it think you have moved slightly and records it. I found the bryton better at tracking, but it's routing was poor.

I use cyclemeter and find it great with my iPhone 4S. One tip though before you go out make sure you double click the button on front of phone and then by pressing each icon you can close all programmes running in background, this will treble the battery life. I can easily do 6 hours and still have juice left.

Thinking I'll now have to 'move over, to Strava from Map My Ride. Is there any way I can tie up the two, without having to manually input the data does any techie folk know?
