I must agree with those who posted to say boxed bikes should be banned. I run a small bike repair business and we see these all the time. Many have have problems which are downright dangerous - and the poor purchaser is left with the expense of getting the thing back to the place whence it came. Buying a bike from a decent LBS should mean that it comes ready assembled having had a full PDI and, if they are any good, they will offer a free check once you have ridden the bike for a couple of hundred miles to see that nothing has come loose or needs tweaking. However, I do know of stores which will charge extra for putting it together and don't offer the free follow up either. We will put together boxed bikes for folk but we are selective on what we will touch as some are just downright dangerous - and we always warn folk that there may be problems before we start. I am glad the OP took this bike back and got his money back - lots of folk seem reluctant to do so - if more did then the message might get across that Joe Public won't accept shoddy stuff. A good quality second-hand bike is often a way better investment than these cheap new ones.

I managed to get rid of the bike, i have returned my bike to Argos...it was not a very good experience now i am hunting for a new bike but within my budget... any suggestions i can spend max 150 quid.

A bit more ( £215 ) but many people including me say this a good bike once set up right .

carrera subway

Decathlon bikes are normally very good and put together well and they also deliver , the carrera is from halfords ... the bikes themselves are good but the quality of assembly can be dependent on the store staff. Most of the assembly is easy enough to do .If you already put together the other bike you should be fine.
For £150 you might be better to go on ebay and look for a second hand bike , if you see one you like you can always post a linky here for any advice.

I would have thought a folder could limit your choices a bit, plus a reasonable bike would make any journey within London feasible, once you get used to it.

There are cheaper options but they generally need a degree of knowledge of bikes, parts and what to look for. It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation, maybe try having a chat with some local bike shops or seeing if anyone you work with has a secret passion for bikes. For example my local tip now sells bikes formally with the top price being £10...you never know what's on offer until you go and look. A lot of them I wouldn't give tuppence for but I've bought complete/partial bikes for £5 and less just to get some parts from them that would have cost me £50+.

It's even worth asking around neighbours to see if anyone has anything mouldering in a shed/garage.
