Just heard on the news that Jeremy Corbin did not own any cufflinks and had to borrow some to meet Chinese officials.

I am not the biggest Corbin fan, but I am with him on this, I have managed to get through life without owning or wearing cufflinks, plus the number of times I have worn a tie can be counted using fingers.

Presumably he had to borrow a shirt too?

I had to buy my first pair when I got married (10 years ago), as the rented suit had a cuff link arrangement in the shirt sleeves. Since then I unknowingly bought a nice shirt in a sale that had no buttons, and I bought another pair of links. I think I have worn the shirt once since I bought it. I can't see any benefit; the cuffs are so much thicker and not very comfortable. Buttons are my preference. It's a shame really becasue you can get all manner of nice looking cuff links in all shapes, sizes and designs.

I think its partly a generation thing. In the 60s/70s they were just part of my regular wear.
Think I still have pair but cannot recall the last time I wore** them
**do you wear them or use them ??

Which means that Jezza must have bought a shirt, or had one bought for him, that had double cuffs, so perhaps they weren’t aware what they were buying.
I still have a few pairs and so does my wife. Still essential if you want to look smart.

I have several pairs but no longer any need to wear them. Ties likewise. Am wondering if I will ever get to wear a smart jacket again...

Have you retired, or has your firm adopted an open neck policy as trail blazed by Richard Branson in the early 2000s?

I only ever wear double-cuff shirts with a suit because I'm a bit of a tart, but I don't understand why it would be deemed 'necessary' for anyone to have to wear them to meet the Chinese ambassador. As far as I'm aware, they're a western fashion item so how could he possibly have been offended by their omission?

I think the reason must be that the person buying didn’t realise it was double cuff hence the scramble to buy the cufflinks, bit of a non story I suspect.

I wear a shirt but no tie in the office. Our customers are semi-casual, it’s chinos and shirt. No smart jackets, no need for double-cuffs, no Joy under a lab-coat.
I don’t go to posh ‘do’s’ any more. I can only think of wearing a smart jacket for BDM use.
I shall never buy another suit....

No cufflinks for me either... (Do they actually serve any useful purpose, or are they just another silly decorative adornment?)

A tie though - thousands of times, at school! My grammar school had a very strict uniform code with no relaxation even for A-level students. At the age of 18.5 I still had to wear a tie while sitting my A-levels, even in a stifling exam room. I ripped the damn thing off after my last exam and chucked it in the bin, swearing that I would never wear one again. I relented for the funerals of my parents, but apart from that I am a tie-free zone.

Company I worked for insisted on them. Had to be suited & booted at all times and when visiting the factory in Yorkshire, shoes had to be shining. Black, no brown shoes allowed.

One of those corporate jobs with layer after layer of middle management all trying to justify themselves and issuing rules and regulations. Hated it.

I had some Tottenham Hotspur cufflinks about 30 years ago.

Long since lost those and I've never bought another pair.

Several of my cheapish single cuff shirts have buttons and two buttonholes to take cufflinks.

I've never owned a double cuff shirt.
