I became a member of the CTC in the early 80s when I stopped cycling competitively and have been a member ever since. Five years ago I took out 'ride' membership of SC/BC because I'm secretary of a SC affiliated club and it was a requirement. I recognised that CTC were moving away from being a 'touring club', but maintained my CTC membership because I identified with the 'tourist' part of the title.

Since taking out membership with SC, I have often questioned my decision to pay fees to both organisations (effectively just for insurance and legal aid) and like @PaulSB I feel CTC lost its way a long time ago. The re-branding issue has been the deciding factor and I've now cancelled the direct debit and my CTC membership will lapse in July.

All this makes the EU referendum seem trivial..

Since my first post on here indicating that this was news to me I have been back on the CTC Forum to question why I had to learn of this from CC rather than from CTC. I even started a thread on the Does anyone know section which directed forum members to the appropriate section where these changes had been mentioned but that was removed very quickly.
After posting my thoughts I received a reply that basically remonstrated with me and told me that this whole issue in its creation had been discussed previously by members before it was implemented.
But although I felt chastened by all of this it still does not answer my question of just how much this as all cost and why as a member wasn't I given a say in the matter.
I understand some of the views expressed on here about their not very positive experiences on using the CTC forum but contrary to that I have found the forum members to be helpful and friendly. However I have been trying to differentiate the CTC forum to the CC forum and the only analogy I can come up with is that being a Baby Boomer I was brought up on reading comics and being a council estate kid I much preferred reading the Beano ( CC ) to reading the Eagle ( CTC)
as the former was far more entertaining.
As for being a member of the CTC when my renewal comes up in November I think I will raise my subscription to Neil at CGOAB as I would much rather give him the money than pay to keep some fat cat at the top of the CTC.
I just hope the TCC gets off the ground and it must be a runner if Chris Juden is interested in being part of it.

You have no need to feel chastened, the reply you received should have resulted a Mod banning the poster for a couple of months IMO, his response to your post was rude and arrogant. Most organisations would circulate the membership by email in order to keep everyone informed of much less important changes than are going on in the CTC just now.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

I wouldn't be at all surprised to discover that a professional and carefully thought-out communications plan has been scuppered by a leak from someone disgruntled. In my experience over the years CTC has been pretty good at communication using its weekly email - but doing that requires discipline from everyone in the know.

Are well here we go why should the mention of a cycling HELMET be a problem ? As long as now one is telling you you have to wear one.
As for the CTC they are no longer what they started out as so may as well change their name as a cyclist touring club they are not .
For what it's worth I will not be renewing my membership when it expires and will probably join B C .

We are now clutching at straws if the excuse for finding out thru the media is being blamed to a leak. What leak? Nothing came out until the Council made the press release. Why hold back the plan if ever there was one.
