More like a kick in the teeth after buying what he thought was a genuine frame.

On a similar theme just picked up daughter's bike after it's 6 week " safety check" to find the front brake pad on one side was set up to engage half on the tyre. I shall be doing it myself from now on, I actually wonder if they did anything.

The lever position is pretty good so long as you never, ever leave the drops.

That's probably what he thought when you said to set it up for aggression - "This guy always rides on the drops, so I'll put the levers down there."

I think it comes as a bit of a shock when a LBS that you think will do a good job - er - don't. When I bought my road bike, from an LBS that does a lot of pre-ride servicing for people doing LEJoG, so I thought they'd be good, I had months of trouble with the chain snagging when changing from the big to middle ring. I took it back several times, and they kept telling me they'd sorted it. In the end I took it to another LBS, they took it out back for 2 minutes, and brought it back fixed. The front derailleur wasn't on straight.

Today I had a reply to my concerns

1. No comment on the valves

2. The headset was broken (IMHO Not true as I was able to fit it)

3. The angle of the bars/shifters was fine as “everyone like different things” and “if you watch the Tour de France, you will see no 2 bikes are set up the same

4. £70 of the cost were for parts: headset bung, seat post clamp and inner tubes

Then why was it fitted if he thought it was broken ... real poor service

whilst that is true... no pro cyclist has a setup like that (which is truly dangerous). the degree of change between one cyclists choice and another is minimal. but that is probably why he didnt tape it, so you could position them as you wish.

4. Should be easy to sort out, did he show you a breakdown of the cost of parts?

I had look at the web page and they have nothing in the way of a price list for certain jobs just a vague disclaimer saying they prefer to quote on a job job basis.

This works to a degree and I have said this to customers my self before now but it pays to have a realistic price list to tot up, it's better to be able to throw in elements of a job for free rather than charging the customer through the nose for every little part of the job - if they are getting the meat of the job done for an agreed price and something incidental that's takes no real time can be sorted as well at the same time then everyone stays happy.

Have a retail price list for services - it gives you wriggle room downwards, it also helps customers understand better if they bring in a bike that is past saving because it is economically beyond repair.
