Should have posted this in this thread - always find the auto focus choice on tulips random/interesting. This was just a quick snap with the cheap phone. I think it might have worked equally well had the focus been on the stamen and the tips of the petals been out of focus.

Went out in the hope of catching the aurora which has been really strong tonight but all I got was 95% cloud cover with the few gaps being overhead or to the west.

Is that metal arch actually properly structural/necessary, or is it (half?) decorative?

It is structural, but is expressed on the facade for aesthetic reasons. I can remember it being used as an example in my first year structures lectures The whole thing sits on two massive granite-faced plinths - one on either side.

I'm assuming it's a kind of suspension bridge arch, with the two diagonal struts being under tension, and there's another one on the other side?
