Would putting a 30 cassette mean I need a bigger cage rear mec ? As its close now

That's a short cage mech so I shouldn't think it would comfortably handle 30t. Have you checked the Shimano website for info? I think you will need a med cage.

28T maximum IIRC.

In an article in Cyclist Mike Burrows is seen to be shortening cranks,the one in the picture looks to be 20-25mm shorter.That is a radical difference to what most of us are riding.

I personally think with some of these cranks:

and some of those elliptical chain rings like Wiggo was sporting at one time, a good airbrush artist and some hi viz colors florescent paint...well you get the idea, the possibilities would be well...interesting.
