America. Beautiful in parts but the people are obnoxious, stupid, ignorant and loud. Not all Americans I know but a lot are.

which bits did you go to?
must admit that ever since youth have thought it fundamentally uncivilised because of the health situation.
but it still tempts in some ways
(even if me being me I think I'll have to learn to bite my tongue somewhat if I ever end up in certain middle of nowhere bars with my bike)

Why is that ??
Admittedly it was in 2000 but we had a wonderful 2 weeks, one of our stand out holidays.

Well it's an offshore haven that pretends to be respectable. Want to hide a boat, a pile of money, hold property anonymously and so on.
It's the Delaware of Europe without the niceties.
Always gave me that awful island feeling. A sun blasted lump of rock. The departure lounge was always the best place.
Never been there on holiday.

Strange isn't it how we're all different... I adore India, I'm completely intoxicated by it every time I go. I do think it's a marmite sort of experience and people either seem to love it or hate it but I'm definitely the former. I even love Mumbai, it is an assault on the senses for sure, but so exhilarating. .
Me too - I love the bits of India I have been to. It’s mostly the people that make it but the frantic, buzzing, sensual assault is really memorable. Yes, there’s very visible poverty but in amongst it are people making the most of it. It’s somewhat humbling.

Worryingly 2 people have mentioned Malta , I was intending to go there in November for a short break.

We've been to Malta itself a couple of times and a couple more times to Gozo, and island next door also part of Malta so to speak. To be fair we were going diving each time, so might not have returned just for a holiday but still an interesting enough place for a short trip at least. There's still a very large Victorian coastal gun I want to visit quite apart from more diving, or even the same diving

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

It’s a bit like Venice, fine for a first visit, but not enough to bring you back. It’s perfectly safe and hassle free as a country to visit and a good winter destination if you haven’t been before.

Malta gets a couple mentions and while I wouldn't go back, I certainly don't have any regrets going. Valetta is beautiful in places, such history and impressive architecture, a visit to the military museum was a highlight, medieval armour, such history.

won't be going back to Venice.
Am sure will disappoint.
will retain glorious memories of inter-rail adventures sleeping next to the grand canal outside the train station,
Long not been allowed i think.
Italy become very anal with youthful adventurers.

Turkey, specifically Icmeler, which I know is a touristy place and should have known it wouldn't really be my thing but it was cheap. Fabulous scenery, and weather but there were things I just found off-putting, specifically the waiter at a restaurant who laughed when my wife at the time settled up when it came to paying the bill.

As far as Turkey (Türkiye) goes I wouldn’t go back to any of the resorts but the Istanbul Marathon is on my bucket list and I therefore plan to that city again.

The Istanbul Marathon is the only intercontinental marathon in the world as it starts in the Asian side of the city and crosses the 15 July Martyrs Bridge to finish in the European side.
My wife and myself agree there's so many places in the world to see, its unnecessary to visit the same place twice...and yet we hope to go back to Alanya for the third time. Its not drowning in history, its buildings aren't particularly impressive, but its got so much, a beautiful long , deep, sandy beach, a small clean city, lovely touristy port, mountains and forests nearby with river running through that doubles up as a park and restaurant area, lovely and cool...its never left us disappointed, people aren't in your face, just a lovely relaxing place.
