Quite a turn up for the books.
Colchester council actualky turned out to be more sensible than some here.

Wow, a rarity indeed, someone who can admit they are wrong. Brilliant

It is really nice to see an actual positive intent in action.

If only it could be transferred to so many of our organisations.
Well played Colchester.

I do wonder what the cyclists that were harangued feel about it though. All is well that ends well for sure, but some had a complete PITA to deal with to get us here.

Another point is, would we have got here without the malcontents?

Threats of a £1000 fine on appeal probably means some paid and, even if refunded, may have endured hardship as a result. Echoes of the Post Office lawyers threatening fraud prosecution if people didn't admit a lesser charge. I hope they get refunded with interest.

Nope. As usual. Well done to the campaigners. And thanks, because this might influence other PSPO abusing councils and their rentathugs.

You know, it was the PO scandal I was thinking about but didn't want to be overly dramatic. As you say, certainly could have caused hardship for some.

There are more of these private prosecution/enforcement scandals to come but none will match the PO one by adding cover-ups before and after, I hope. A railway one hit the papers last week and had some inconsistencies in company statements. The council in this case has readily confessed and said it will learn.

Not sure if I'm missing something here, or if maybe the cyclist was smuggling drugs in his haversack, but this seems extreme to me.

I know its probably an unfair comparison, but I couldn't help but notice this link from the comments.

Insane politicians grabbing all the money they can to spend. A 5 pound fine would be about right.

BBC News - Speakers to play town centre rules every 15 minutes

Being a nice Jewish boy this isnt an observation I make lightly, but barking orders at the oppressed masses via loudspeaker is uncomfortably close to a certain regime almost a century ago.

They should make a proper effort to deal with those that cause trouble or danger, and leave those that behave themselves to get on with their lives without undue state interference.

Wow
probably a good time for some evangelical Christians to come along and start preaching
at least it would be better than the "rules" being broadcast every few minutes

and it says every 15 minutes - wonder how long the announcement is??
either way - anyone wanting to sit on a bench for a nice natter is going to be a bit annoyed with this "idea"
