Coros Cycling Computer - Game changer?

DC Rainmaker has a hands on first thoughts up now, there's a few " issues " at the moment

It’s first generation device, though COROS do have good experience with their watches.

As with anything new there will we some issues though hopefully they can be corrected in software and not hardware.

Personally I avoid very new products and wait for them to mature a little.

There's a first look review here as well:

https://bikepacking.com/gear/coros-dura-review/

To be honest, aside from the claimed battery life, I really don't see anything too special here. Interestingly the battery is also smaller than the one in my Edge Explore 2, so lets see how they are getting the claimed life out of it aside from Solar top up.

It has a smaller screen than my Edge Explore 2 with the same resolution and everything else seems broadly similar. It will be interesting to read the reviews in more detail and see how it develops, but I don't initially see anything game changing here apart from the possible battery longevity.

Doubts over battery and solar claims in rainmakers review above

In the Bikepacking review above they reproduce a Coros claim of 120 hrs without solar (All Systems On) and 70hrs without solar (dual frequency). All systems on/dual frequency are settings to do with GPS signal reception I think

Main battery saving is going to be that MIP display. The pixels only draw microWatts if they are not changing. Most of pixels are just white.

Just watched DCR. So - let's imagine they fix all the snagging issues. What's great about it?

Battery life? That was a real problem 10+ years ago, but not so much now. Provided that it lasts for 12-24 hrs that's 99% of cyclists sorted. Most people will be going to be having a sleep near a mains outlet. Yes extreme adventurers, tourers and hardcore audaxers may need super battery but I don't think there are enough of them to make it a killer feature.

Simple friendly interface? Ray hates that wheel thingy, but let's say he's wrong and it's actually great. They'll have to go some to beat Wahoo, and even Garmin are getting their act together. Kinda.

Really new features? There aren't any

So if they fix all that stuff they'll end up with a decent enough GPS with a battery life much bigger than most people need ever, and bigger than anyone needs most of the time.

Nice, but not a game changer.

The ‘wheel thingy’ is, IMHO, one of the best bits about COROS stuff.

Touch screens can get a bit iffy when wet, or with wet hands (I’ve hd a Garmin 1040 change screens in heavy rain) and having to resort to up/down buttons is a PITA. A scroll wheel is simpler, quicker and easier to use with gloves on.

I'm thinking of moving my 1040 to an out front mount because dripping sweat* onto it keeps causing it to prompt me "stop navigating?" or some such. And sometimes even madder things. It's generally OK in rain tho.

* Or nose drips in winter.
