Cheers. Why can't they just measure it in degrees!

Hi,
Because percentage makes far more sense to most people.
In the UK though they use a ratio, e.g. 5% is a 1 in 20 hill
and a 1 in 10 hill is 10%. They both make far more sense in
practical terms than 3 degrees and 6 degrees to everyone.

6 degrees sounds positively wimpish, 10 % or 1 in 10 doesn't.

Here's the CycleChat Ecosse group at play on the Isle of Arran this year. From 2:22 is the 50mph descent at the north of the island. Fastest I've ever been on a bike.
