Hi
Currently I have a pay-as-you-go orange phone, but I'm considering biting the bullet and getting a contract. I dont talk much on the phone, I text about 20 times a week.

Any contract recommendations, please?

Thanks

I usually go with a refurbished phone when my contract is due.
e2save do the xperia U (competitor to an iPhone 4s) at £10.50 a month but their cashback may make it half that.
Its t-mobile so the small data allowance probably includes unlimited browsing. (triple check that)

Just done it myself. 6p a text, 10 p a minute, free to anyone else on gg (as long as you do at least a £10 topup every 3 months). Heavy users can buy great deal monthly 'goodybags'. Uses the 02 network, so check that you get a good 02 signal.

Oh, and you can get £5 for yourself for signing up other people, and they get £5 credit too.

Do you know if I will be able to keep my existing phone number?
Phone Orange (450) and ask for a PAC (Port Authorisation Code) because you want to leave. They must give it to you. It will be valid for 30 days. Give giffgaff (or whoever else you move to) the PAC and they will transfer your current number to them.

Prices and offers vary loads. Only a couple of months ago I went for Orange Sim only 12 month contract, 'unlimited' free texts, 300minutes, 500mb data on offer at £10.50 instead of £15.50pm and I keep the 6 "magic numbers" I got from my previous contract, so free calls to 6 appointed numbers. I don't really use it much anyway, but near enough unlimited everything for £10.50 per month isn't bad. I sent my smartphone to be fixed under warranty at 24 months and they sent me a new model replacement too

So many people throw so much money away on £50pm contracts and upgrading just to have the latest flagship phone that the deals on 2nd hand/refurbs are good now, especially since most of the recent steps forward in technology are pointless for most people.

£7 a month gets me 600mins unlimited texts and 1gb Internet from virgin mobile. That's with an £8 discount mind, which is easy to get.

I took out the original £7 a month contract (only 30 day contracts) which gives you something like 150 minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb Internet.
Phone up after 30 days and said I was thinking about leaving. Within minutes I was offered what I have now for the same £7

Virgin use orange / t mobile so EE now. Signal is great and so's the 3G.

I've been with Vodafone and tmobile on long expensive contracts in the past. Never again! I'll buy the phones I want outright and stick to my £7 a month!!

Having done this a couple of times myself (although not with the networks in question), when you ask for the PAC code, you will undoubtedly be transferred to someone who will try to keep you on the network you are leaving. Best bet is to make it very clear to the first person you speak to that you have no intention of staying with them and NEED the PAC code. Unless of course, you do actually want to listen to their temptations to keep you on the network!

I'm quite interested in this too. Do you need a lot of internet data to record rides on Strava? Much cheaper than buying a Garmin I reckon.

That near £5 a month 250MB basic with the free U would more than cover the tiny Strava data sends.

Maybe that's what such a pitiful allowance is for.

'Pends how much you really use it and what for. At the mo I hardly use mine and am on a contract for £1 [yep one pound] a month, includes 50 free texts and 20 mins call time, Picked up a phone for a tenner from Tesco and there you go. That was via an offer from carfone wearhouse. As I said, it all depends on what you want you toy to do.
