But fundamentally one person's opinion, no matter how scientifically done. Is victory in the Volta a Catalunya worth the same as winning one of the monuments? I would say no, but that's just MHO and no more valid than his.

But his rankings do coincide rather well with the official ones (with one of two well-explained exceptions). I would suggest therefore that he is on to something and that it is a little more than simply 'opinion'. Feel free to come up with your own system and rankings though - no-one's stopping you!

Hmmmmm, that's definitely a blog worth dicussing over a pint or five! Suggesting that if Cav gets to 30 GT stage victories that the order of the top 5 might change is pretty idiosyncratic, to say the least!
"Barring something unforeseen, Cav is on the fast track to racking up 30 Grand Tour stages; he’s already got 21. If he does, his achievement will have an impact at the very head of the rankings – the order among the Top 5 will change. "

It would be based on a lot simpler system if I did. ;)

I'm not saying that it's a load of rubbish (far from it), but it wouldn't take much tweaking in the values to produce a fundamentally different order (top 5 probably notwithstanding). This comment on the site is telling: "I was originally going to go with 1 point for each stage win, but doing so really altered the final standings" implying that to a certain extent he made the values fit the results he was looking for, rather than the other way around.

And how can you compare one day specialists with stage racers and sprinters? From different eras? I'm just not sure that you can. It doesn't stop it being an interesting debate, it's just that - even though someone has taken such time and care over producing a list - you can't call the results definitive.

I didn't say they were 'definitive', and I think debate is the point. I just like using it to point out that Lance Armstrong still doesn't hold a candle to Eddy Merckx!

They're already working on it at a laboratory in Mexico.

I think Eddy is a bit too tubby these days for a comeback ;) (and seems very happy with his life as it is). Oh, you meant the other one

As for Contador leaving Astana (yes I now belatedly realise I had a typo in the thread title) and joining Riis, it's not a combo I like but I can see the reasoning.
